A fistula connects an artery to a vein in the upper arm. As such, it diverts a considerble amount of blood from that arm and weakens it from a reduction in oxygen. I have one and I can't even support myself on that arm. Its very limiting and aggravating.

Terry I don't have one ( I am only stage 3) and I am quite sure it's no fun BUT it is life saving.  So beyond the bother it is going to be well worth it.

hey Terry, it might be a bit late, but i thought i'd chime in. i am 36 y.o. and have end stage kidney failure. i went for about five years doing p.d. it worked well for me, although there were a couple infections. then i got a doozy infection, and had to have the p.d. catheter removed. they put in a hemo cath, and then about 8 weeks ago i got a fistula in the lower bicep. it was a outpatent surgery, and all went well. they are breaking it in at the clinic now.since the surgery, and since everything has healed, i have full use of the arm.but i notice a lack of circulation. i'll be happy when they take the hemo cath out. hope that helps
