Hearing loss due to Ménière’s disease

I was first diagnosed with Menieres Disease 5 years ago and had dizziness, sickness and loss of hearing for 2 months and then it went away on its own. 5 years later I have it back again and it seems worse this time. I've been off work since 18 January now. The dizziness and sickness stopped three weeks ago but i just can't get rid of the tinnitus and fullness feeling in my ear so i constantly have hearing loss. I've been confined to the house for weeks now. Unfortunately I am completely deaf in my left ear due to measles when I was 5 years old so only have my right ear to hear with which is the affected ear. The ENT consultant won't do the steroid injection as he said it can go wrong for 1 in 1000 people and he doesn't want me to be that one and then lose the hearing completely in my only hearing ear. I've not been given any tablets either as he said they are only short term. I really need to get back to work as I'm worried i might lose my job if i'm off too long. Does
anyone else still go to work with the tinnitus and hearing loss. Any idea how
it will go on for?

Hi Julie
I too have meniers in both ears. I sometimes think that I cannot take the tinnitus anymore but continue on.
I have lost 30% of hearing loss in one ear and 20% in the other. I recently got some hearing aids and I find a big difference helping with the tinnitus. It does not go away entirely of course, but I find it does help. You see, something I did not know was that because of the ears measuring difference in hearing loss, I was off balance. Having the hearing aids now equalizes the sounds and I do not find being dizzy happens as much. However, like I mentioned, I have not had the hearing aids long....but do notice a difference.
Wishing you well.
Sharon

Hi Sharon when I had a hearing test apparently the hearing is not bad enough to warrant a hearing test right now, luckily the last time I had any dizziness was 27 February so that side of things seems to have calmed down. Its the hearing loss and tinnitus which really gets me down.
Kind regards
Julie

One further thing Julie. I wear what's called a crossover hearing aid - I wear a microphone in my deaf ear which transmits instantly to the hearing aid in my other ear. So it allows me to hear sounds on my deaf side.

I wish I could hear in my left ear but I'm totally deaf due to getting measles when I was 5. Maybe in time I will need a hearing aid in my right ear.
kind regards
Julie
