Hearing music or sound when it is silent

I first started experiencing hearing music in silence when I was about 6. It happens when I cover one ear like laying on my side and I will hear a full band. as i got older now 33 I'm hearing people sing almost it isnt a song I know and sometimes it even sounds like a sitcom with a laugh track. it has been keeping me up and I feel like I'm going nuts. Does anyone have any idea about what is going on?

Its fairly common. its called Auditory Hallucination. I get it a lot and always have, but have always assumed it was because I lost the hearing in one of my ears when I was 3 years old. I think it can also be called Singing ear syndrome ...or something like that. Used to be considered a possible symptom of mental illness but that has been disproved.I am told its when its very quiet that your brain tries to fill in the noise and will "replay" some of the noises you have heard in the past...like a memory.

If it doesnt bother you and your hearing is otherwise normal then dont worry about it. If you feel your hearing is deteriorating then you need to see your GP or an Audiologist or ENT Consultant. Its also often thought to be a form of tinnitus.

I am sure my Mother used to get it as well. But she had perfect hearing.
