Yes. I get that heart palpitations and anxiety and burning crushing feeling in my chest upon waking.
Normally the body is awakened from sleep by a tiny amount of adrenaline.
During perimenopause/menopause the hormones are out of balance and the adrenal glands secrete too much adrenaline and at the wrong times during the night and in the morning. Therefore causing us to wake during the night and not being able to get back to sleep, causing that adrenaline rush feeling and making our hearts palpitate like we have been scared out of our wits.
My heart will beat SO hard and fast it is so scary.
I have found that avoiding certain food and drink us helping me. I avoid sugar, potatoes, pasta, bread, chocolate, caffeine, fruit juices, alcohol. Anything that is high in sugar or becomes sugar or anything that will affect the adrenals.
Give your adrenals some rest. If you feel tired, rest for a bit on the sofa. Avoid the news too, it is upsetting and causes stress.
Menopause is dreadful. The anxiety, heart palpitations, hot and/or cold flushes, sleep problems, unexplained crying and anger, being unreasonable, exacerbated menstrual symptoms, increased urination etc.... Oh, the joy.
Take care

Hello Struggling, thank you for your response..because of the holiday I did eat foods high in salt and sugar also soda, which I never drink. I agree with you about the foods, I never even thought of that. I still get my period every month, sometimes late or early. Very heavy flow, I am 51 and it's like enough already. I am so foggy and sometimes feel so out of it. Can't wait when all this is over...

Hello.
Yes, salt causes me problems as well. Sugar & yeast can cause the foggy brain as well.
I am 51, too. I still have a period every month. It is usually 26 to 30 days apart. Between Oct & Nov of this fall it was only 16 days between periods. I spot for a day then 2 heavy days then spotting for a couple of days.
My periods used to be a light flow but the flow is getting heavier.
I get sharp stabbing pains in my breasts during the month, and cramping all month long instead of just before my period.
The anxiety is definitely the worst symptom I have.
I have had changes in body & breath odor. I have to use an all natural charcoal based deoderant.
So many strange symptoms.

I Was on vacation when it happened to me I was a nurse so it heightened my anxiety to another level so I had found soaking in two cups of Epsom salt for a half hour really helped and when I came home I started taking magnesium which have helped immensely I get them every once in a blue moon and it may happen like once when it does good luck and know your not dying

I will definitely try the magnesium. I have a good quality magnesium powder that you disolve in water.
I think magnesium is good for sleep too.

Hello,
I have heard magnesium is good also. I am afraid to take anything because I am always so afraid of side effects. I am on Paxil, Nortriptyline, and Norvasc for elevated blood pressure. I got it in my late 40's just like my mother. Even with those anti depressant/anti anxiety meds, i still feel a lot of anxiety, sometimes down and extremely unmotivated. It is a terrible feeling. Everything feels like such an effort. I was walking up to two times a day with my dogs, but it is 17 degrees where I live and I have not been walking. I feel worse now. I guess the hormones are reeking havoc. This sucks. Cannot wait til it's over.

Hello.
Sorry you are feeling so bad.
It is miserable.
Antidepressants and antianxiety meds don't really help menopausal anxiety and depression. Menopause anxiety and depression are sex hormone and adrenal driven.
Antidepressants and antianxiety meds work on serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain.
I can't exercise any more either or even work a hard day physically at home doing housework.
I overdid yesterday doing housework and I didn't sleep well last night and woke up today with anxiety, feelings of doom, tightness in my chest and roiling bowels.
I'm taking it easy today
The only exercise I can do is Tai Chi and Yoga. I only know a little Tai Chi but I do the poses over and over and I enjoy it. It helps me to be focused and calm. Same with the yoga
I am due to start my period any day now. That is most probably the cause of my symptoms that I have been having for over a week now. But, overdoing physically and eating badly seem to really exacerbate my symptoms. Not resting or sleeping well are bad for symptoms too.
I need to pace myself through out the day but I never seem to be able to do it.
I hope you feel better soon.

I am really sensitive to herbs and medications and to chemicals. I have been sensitive my whole life but these sensitivities have gotten worse with this whole menopause/perimenopause.
