I've been doing some research and feel very concerned that stats show a risk of heart attack following this major surgery it states 8 x more likely due to all inflammation as body tries to repair , I find this very worrying just before surgery , however no one here as mentioned they had heart complications post op

Kind Regards

That's because we haven't had any heart problems Angie. There is a risk wth any surgery. Too much research would not have anyone having any procedures done. Don't worry about this. Look forward to having a new hip and say goodbye to the old pain. Xx

Angie, there are risks with every kind of surgery and medical treatment. There are many other risks with THR besides the greater risk of heart attack in the first 4 weeks after surgery. The question we all have to ask of ourselves are the risks worth the benefits of the surgery. If you have bone-on-bone osteoarthritis with horrendous pain, and constant use of walking aids or needing to use a wheelchair, those are the reasons that we choose to have the surgery.

An article I found said the following:

"Overall, neither knee or hip replacement increases the risk of heart attack over the entire follow-up period in our study, even though the risk was substantially increased shortly after surgery," he said. "This risk should not keep a patient from having either surgery."

    ...

Indeed, the odds of a heart attack dissipated over time in these patients, the study found. However, the odds of blood clots in veins and lungs increased in the month following surgery and lasted for years after knee or hip replacement was performed, the researchers said.

    ...

Dr. Gregg Fonarow, a professor of cardiology at the University of California, Los Angeles, said, "It is well documented that during and early after a variety of surgical procedures that the risk of a heart attack is elevated."

Also the reason risk is increased is due to lack of mobility, years ago the risk was the same for having a baby, you would have been immobilized for a minimum of 10 days and longer after an op, this is why your up and moving very quickly, its all to do with being non mobile, same as if your sedantry in general your risk is much higher
