Heartburn cause ?

Hello everyone,
I am a 35 yo man, and since recently (3 month) started to feel some unpleasant burning feelings in my chest several times after meals. After doing some Internet search I figured out that it might be heartburn and am now looking for solutions.
I am not really sure what exactly causing it. There are so much information around it. Excess acidity, low acidity, excess gas in my stomach?
Could you please share your experience and how did you figure out the reason why you suffered? Did you go to doctor to find out? Did it help you in order to know how to treat ?
Did it work?
Thanks in advance.

I have been suffering GERD for almost one and half years. Of course, the symptoms are on and off during this time. I would say that mostly were OK. My initial symptoms were lump feeling and heartburn, then i went for EGD done. The results were esophagitis with H.Pylori negative. The GI doctor prescribed me Pantoprazole for me for three months, by the around 10th since i took this medicine, my symptoms had gone and i was symptoms free for a long time. For this recurrence, i think that the culprit should be green tea and spicy food. I drank strong green tea for almost 10 days since June 15th, 2019. Some symptoms started to recur around 23th of last month. Instead of just taking Pepto initially, I tried not to take PPI, Then i realized that this didn't work for me. So, i started to take Pantoprazole at around 26th of June. I was symptoms free after thress days of Pantoprazole. I was happy and thought that it was ok for me to eat some really spicy food which i ate for two days. That was a big mistake i made. Then horrible symptoms recured until now. My current symptoms are Belching, heartburn, lump feeling in my throat (aggravate in the evening). I saw my doctor last Friday. She told me to keep on Pantoprazole for three months and avoid some food that may trigger symptoms, but i haven't seen any improvement by now. I'm considering to switch to Esomeprazole instead and to have a H.Pylori test done to see if i'm re-infected by H.Pylori.
For your case, i think it may cause by certain food, and i do think that you need to keep on PPI for a while.

If your pants waist is tight, if you've gained weight recently, if you have a hernia, these are things that can cause it. (Among other things!)
I've always had a bit of heartburn and Tums usually is enough for me. It started getting worse as I gained weight and I went on omeprazole. I have recently stopped the omeprazole and am okay. I still have heartburn but I take Tums and that relieves it most of the time. What I've found to be one of the causes for me (in addition to the fact that I have a hernia) is the medications that I've been taking. I now take my medications early in the evening (no later than 6:00) so that they are not sitting in my stomach when I go to bed.
I sleep with my head inclined.
I'm dealing with the GERD just fine now without the omeprezole.
My advice: stay off the PPI drugs if you can.
