hi all looking for some help, doctor diagnosed plantar fasciitis no confidence in doctor took 10 days to send for me an x ray after 3 visits with a broken bone in my foot a few years ago. I get no pain in the mornings and day to day it is not a problem. I normally put in about 40 miles a week running and gives me no pain until i stop( i have stopped running and in the gym now). I am planning a 500 mile walk in April and have been doing some long walks recently, after about 5/6 miles into the walk it feels like there is a stone in my boot just in front of my heel, i can walk through it and have carried on to do 11/12 miles though it is very sore when i stop. But after a couple of hours it goes after rolling pin / golf ball on the base of my foot and again no pain at all the next morning. I have a couple of questions 1- do you think it is plantar fasciiti 2-Pain not a major issue would it be ok to walk the 500 miles or do i risk causing more damage apologies if a little long winded would appreciate any in help thanks

Hi Patrick,
You certainly have all the normal symptoms of PF and not suprising after pounding the heel for 40 miles.
Yopu are lucky it goes away after rolling it on a rolling pin, most of us are stuck with it for months.
Your heel may be able to stand walking if you take a few precautions like wearing trainers with plenty of cushioning in the heel with gel heel pads or PF insoles that pad the heel and transfer some weight onto the sole of the foot. Running is a different problem as you are pounding the heel unless you can run on your toes which I certainly can't, gave up running years ago when my knee started playing up. When you get old you have to nurse the old body if you want it to last, take up swimming and I find skiing a great way to exercise without pounding the legs, they get a bit bruised and twisted but that's not as bad as that sharp stabbing pain just in front of the heel as though you are standing on a nail.

it sounds exactly like PF to me...I wouldn't dare have ignored the pain of mine ! And the fact that you are rolling a golf ball on your foot -well that's what my Physio told me to do to speed up recovery, except she also told me to use a bottle of frozen water, because the cold and the rolling encourages the blood flow into your instep, which is naturally poor in blood flow. If PF is tiny tears in the PF ligament, how will they ever heal if you keep pounding on them? Talk to a physiotherapist, and don't risk your feet. It can take months to heal, even if you are resting it a lot
