Heel pain

I dislocated and broke my ankle 3 weeks ago. I had surgery and after two weeks in a cast, I was given a boot. Sleeping in the boot is extremely uncomfortable as my foot feels hot at night. Two days ago, I started getting an annoying heel pain which feels a little like someone is poking needles into my heel. I can't get comfortable at all in the boot. Has anyone experienced this type of heel pain? Is this normal? Any tips on how to handle it?

My heel hurt terribly in the boot overnight. I ended up making a secure leg and foot hole out of a triangle pillow and sleeping without the boot. Check with your doctor that its okay first though - my break was not as bad as what you have described.

As long as the boot isn't too tight anywhere, then Pins and needles is good! That's the nerves reconnecting and healing as the swelling goes. It should settle down. My boot came with extra foam inserts, which I put in to help take pressure off and reduce the sensations to the area.

Thank you for your quick response. I checked with my doctor, and I need to keep the boot on. I'm getting used to sleeping with it, and my heel pain comes and goes. The doctor was not concerned. I guess all that left to do is to keep my fingers crossed that everything heals properly. Any tips on walking on crutches? My good leg knee is letting me know that it's had enough.

    Hi

I had orif surgery 5 weekes ago 28/5/20. I broke my Tib, fibula & my ankle. I had 3 plates and 22 screws. I have that sensation. It is part of the healing I was told. lt's the nerves etc reconnecting. My heel is still numb as is my big toe. May i ask, does your foot go an angry purple when you stand? mine is super bad.

Wow, 3 plates. As far as I know, I have one plate and 8 screws. However, I wasn't really provided with many details. I know that their main concern was that it was badly dislocated and several broken bones. Because of this injury, I'm non weight baring, so I don't stand on the injured foot. And, standing on crutches has not caused any color changes thus far. I think you should call your doctor about your purple ankle. Are you weight baring?
