Heel Shoe.... am I over doing it too soon?

I'm nearly 6 weeks post op, had the heel shoe for the last 11 days and expecting to have to wear it for about another 4 weeks.  I was told to use the walking frame when walking and told that I still need to keep my foot elevated and to rest however over the past few days I am finding I am moving more and more and am also relying less and less on the frame for support.  I have never been a person to sit still and the shoe has given me more freedom and not sure if this is a good thing or not!  Starting to busy myself around the house with light chores.  I know my foot isn't enjoying it as I have been getting pain on and off around the side of my foot and in my big toe, so I am sort of answering my own question!  Probably should be resting more and doing less.  Would love to hear how others are coping and what you are doing since getting the heel shoe fitted

    Glad you are more mobile now. I am 3 weeks post op and my surgeon told me to start moving around more after the first week in my Velcro shoes. After the first week I had to wear this aircast boots which look like space shoes. Unfortunately I could not wear them as they gave me a lot of sharp pains that took my breath away. Is that kind of heel shoes you are wearing?

    So I am back to my lovely Geisha Velcro sandals. Still have to rest quite a lot as my feet hurt after about 5 minutes of walking.

    It seems it's a long process.

      My shoe is the velcro kind (Darco branding).  Sounds awful the experience you were having in the "space shoes"!

      Yes That's the ones similar to the ones I am wearing now which is more comfortable . The space boots are impossible as well as very expensive.

      Trying now to send them back and get s refund hopefully.

    Hi, keep going and do walk around because I can tell you that I am now in week 10 and what you are experiencing I had also and I can tell you that my toes and feet are feeling great.  I got my heel shoe off at 6 weeks and I had a day at work when I was on my feet most of the day, up and down and by the end of the day my foot was throbbing, however I went home, elevated, put on some ice and by the next morning my foot was fine.  Over the last four weeks I have had pain in the side of my foot and realised quite quickly that was caused by the swelling under my foot not allowing my toes to go down to the floor so when was walking it was the side of my foot taking the pressure.  Any pain I get, normally sharp is over quickly and I am now realising that I can challenge the lack of movement in my toes through excercises which I got of you tube. Any pain when I push my toes backwards and forwards is over quickly so by doing the excercises the mobility in my toes, within the last week has improved considerably and I can push with almost no pian now.  So keep going, don't be put off, if you feel you can walk about, go out to the shops etc then just do it, I'm definately getting the benefit now.

      Thanks for sharing your experience with me Veronica.  I am of the mind that if I don't start using my foot it is only going to delay my final recovery time however I want to ensure I don't cause any further damage at the same time.  The old adage is true I guess, listen to your body, it will tell you when it has had enough!  I won't push it until I'm in unbearable pain but a little discomfort is only to be expected.  Everyone has different pain levels but I like to think mine are quite high and I can put up with a fair bit before turning to pain pills.  I've been "pottering around" of and on so far today and so far no pain smile
