Heelslides

I have a question. I am working at home on heelslides. Did so last night but I do have some pain on outside of knee almost back of knee. My question is should I take today off or take pain meds and try some more?

Any thoughts? I guess my concern is is pain normal as I am trying to increase range or is knee needing a break cause it’s stressed.

7 weeks is early , try doing physio a little and often , don't over do it . Take your pain medication before you do physio , it gets better in time . Every recovery is different , don't worry if some one appears to be doing better than you are . We all recover differently .

Thank you so much. I have not done any heelslides today but might try to do some stretching today. I did take it easy as I had pain this morning that I had not had before so I thought maybe I tried too hard during the heelslides  yesterday. I appreciate your feedback. So helpful when going thru this and I feel so different now.

I have never had to recover from anything like this before. It’s a tough one for sure!

You have had a very serious operation , your knee has been taken apart and rebuilt , not something you recover from quickly . I think everyone who has a TKR gets the Why did I have it done feeling at sometime, don't worry once you recover and your quality of life improves you will be glad you did it . Watch a few videos on YouTube and you will realise how much is involved in the operation . It's over 19 & 17 years since my TKRs and I have had no problems at all . Something for you to look forward to .

Go slow and steady its not necessary to go so far as to be in pain. Ice immediately afterwards and , I've always used Vit E oil, massaged In twice a day with thumbs. Put your foot on a metal tray to cut down friction. Speed and pressure and big numbers not as important as gentle, regular and steady

Thanks! I get freaked out because PT drives numbers. So I will be gentle I took today off from them and just walked today as I was not feeling well at all. I am feeling better now for the first time in a couple of days. I know I overdid it a couple of days ago and by the end of the day I had walked nearly 5 miles. I paid a big price. Really set me back so now I know.

Thanks so so much for your input!

I am not sure because, apart from one occasion when I was straightening my knee, i never caused myself any significant pain when working on range of motion, but I would have thought if it is constant pain it is related to your walking too much... so resting, icing, elevation above heart, and stretching as you have already thought sounds good.

The time I did cause my knee pain it got very red and was very painful very quickly ...gosh, it was angry! But by the next day it was better. In fact after ice, elevation and pain relief it felt a lot better even just a couple of hours later.

I also had one evening after a physiotherapy session where I knew I had done too much, not in respect to range of motion, but overloading it with weights and it got very red, warm and painful all evening and the next day.

It is quite hard to gauge what is happening, i remember this well. I read somewhere on here that after exercises any pain shouldnt last longer than half an hour and if it does you have overdone it. That seems very sensible...someone's sports physiotherapist told them that.

It may be helpful to talk with your physiotherapist about your concerns with respect to reading pain and judging how much is too much?

    How is the swelling?

Thank you Jenny! This makes sense and I think I over did it. Previous day almost logged in 5 miles then next day pt exercises and heel slides so I think over the last week have just over done. I took it slower today and did not do them. I have knee pain now but my body over all feels much better. It’s late here CA USA and I am debating taking a 1/2 pain pill to ease pain maybe avoid waking up in pain lol

Take 2, they're cheap. Where in CA are you. I'm I n the heartland, 30 min SW of downtown KC.

I'm on a weekend getaway and some inconsiderate family of complete idiots checked in above me @ 1:15 a.m. Started stomping, slaming drawers and doors, talking very loud, showering and making multiple trips to the car. There goes my night. I was a traveling salesman for nearly 45 years and prided myself on courtesy to my fellow traveler.

My wife is in advance g stages of Parkinson's disease and dementia. The kids and I finally insisted and convinced her to accept respite care for the weekend so I could get away for the 1st time in 18 months then for people like that to be allowed to run free in society. Oh well, so much for the ranting and screaming obscenities into my pillow. Hope your night eases up and allows you to get some real rest. I've had 11 surgeries, 30 rounds o f radiation and 5 complete rehabs and have found the combination of hydration and real rest as the secret ingredients to quality rehabilitation

Both are easily accomplished by me, especially the bad. I always said my major contribution to the church choir was staying away.

Oh first let me say how sorry I am to hear of your wife’s condition. That is very difficult and I wish you and your family well through the journey that remains.

Terrible to have inconsiderate people like that who totally lack awareness mad

I hope you got some rest at least!

I am in central California but grew up in Bay Area.

I am sad about outside knee pain now after trying to do heel slides sad I hope it’s not serious.

thanks so much for replying! Safe travels.

Oldfatguy1 - on a side note - I know exactly what you are going through. Hope your wife gets some comfort. I am going through the same thing advance dementia with my mother among other illness plus my TKR that I had a year ago and I still cannot bend my knee more than 105. Sometimes I could get to 110 but very rare. I still have a lot of pain, but I honestly think that because my Mom has been so sick I did not take the time to take care of myself. I had my surgery in October 2016 and 10 weeks later had to fly to NY because my mother was in the hospital and since her dementia is so advance I needed to be there to talk to the doctors since I only have one other sibling that has RSD. I can’t take care of my mother because of my knees, but I am her voice. We have someone that takes care of her. I have not slept in about 10 days. My mother has upstairs neighbors that stay awake all night. They are not from the States so I guess their sleeping habits  are different. After all this is NY.  I am thinking just going home for 3 weeks so I could hibernate  in my room and rest.  Sorry that you and your family went away and had the inconsiderate people above your room. Best of Luck. J-21370
