Hi, everyone! I just had a Heller Myotomy and Fundoplication surgery a few days ago. Since the surgery, I still have trouble swallowing. Liquids doesn't seem to go down, but instead it would come back up. Has any one have this problem?

You are healing from the inside out.  However, having said that, I would strongly suggest you contact the surgeon's office.

The surgeon didn't necessarily give me a set of instructions. While in the hospital, I told my surgeon that I am not able to swallow, even liquids. She really thought that I would have been able to swallow liquids right away being diagnosed with achalasia just as all of her patients do, so she says. I discharged from the hospital in hopes that I would eventually be able to swallow something, but I did not see any improvements so I went to go see my surgeon again yesterday. She has contacted my GI specialist into seeing what matters we should take. Luckily enough, my surgeon's PA has really been having my back on all of this. Since today is Thanksgiving and I have two papers due at the end of the week, I'll be going into the office to see if things improve, if not then I will be admitted again to do some tests.

Give it some time for the swelling go down. Its a hard surgery and your body needs to heal. Be sure to stay bon the post Nissan diet to heal right. No soda pop at all. And be sure to take simethacone for gas

I'm not even sure what a Nissan diet is... My surgeon didn't really go through with me. I mentioned to her that I'm not able to hold down any liquids, jello or apple sauce but surprisingly, I held down a pizza roll. That's when she suggests I eat solid foods. =\

Look it up on the internet Post Nissan Diet. My doc who's done many of these recomends to heal up with this diet not a spice food becareful you will pay in long run if not eat right.

After I had the HM with dor fundoplication, it took awhile to be able to eat and drink properly. Everything still felt like it was going to come back up and I followed my instructions to a "T". I was on a liquid diet for a month post surgery and then soft foods after that. It takes awhile for your body to heal especially that area...it's so sensitive. If it's really bothering you after a couple of weeks, you should contact your doctor. But, please make sure you're following your post op instructions just as the dr has ordered.

My surgeon did not give me any post op instructions on my diet, nor has really given me any hope at all for that matter. Thankfully enough, her PA has been really helpful and supportive of me. And thank you for this reply. It gives me hope.

Im sorry you weren't given any post op instructions. Hopefully the PA will be more helpful and give you some. It's been 5yrs since I had my surgery and even though I still have problems, I'm glad I had it. Best of luck!

Update: I was admitted into the hospital today because I started to feel fatigue and weak from dehydration. I had a swallowing test in radiology and it shows that the fluids is not passing to my stomach, but just sitting in my esophagus. The x-rays also shows that my esophagus is very narrow, which is possibly the reason why nothing is passing through. Now, I am waiting for doctor to scope me.

Did the do pictures after your surgery? Thats not good if it closed up on you after surgery . That why the doc recommend a post Nissan diet .no soilids

No, I don't think they took any pictures after the surgery. The nurse just informed me that the surgeon on call will be seeing me some time today to work out a plan. As far as I know, the narrowing of the esophagus might be caused from esophageal spasms.
