Hello

I am a female 47, when I was born it was discovered that I had 'hair' growing out from my back. When I was approximately 18 months old I had surgery and skin-graph to remove this. My mother I and know very little about my defect at birth other than it was 'nearly' spina bifida. A few years ago after an x-ray for abdominal pain, I was asked by the Doctor did I know that I had a curvature to my spine? Also I have always had one hip larger than the other so have had to have one trouser leg longer than the other. I have had 3 children and since the birth of my second child in 1989 have suffered with occasional back problems sometimes being 'out of action' but I know what not to do to hinder this too much. As I am getting older my back pain niggles more, especially if I do too much physical work, if I am stactic too long and also if I don’t take my ibuprofen tablets. I do not know if these things are connected? I don’t know what I have got to look out for in the future, should I visit my GP surgery and tell them my history or wait for something to happen? Could anyone point me in the right direction please? Cheryl.

Hi Cheryl, what you say replicates my 'condition' exactly to a T. At birth, etc. etc. I now have osteoarthritis because of it and boy, does it cause pain; so now I take combined opioid medication. After my doctor finding out I have curvature of the spine he has been good at administering pain killers, not the inflammatories as these have no effect on our condition. Prior to being diagnosed it was the same old routine, mmmm, back pain ah! yes loose weight, excersise and don't smoke! But as I've said, I'm now getting help with the aid of Analgesics; nothing else helps.

Noticed this was posted in '08. but I hope it gives someone advise as I have never come across anyone else with this condition though it is popular enough.

    Take care, Ron.

Hi folks .I have found that paramol [ painkillers ] work as well as increasing chronic uti medication as usually out of control. Acupuncture cupping & TENS machine can also be effective.
