Hello there

Posted , 29 users are following.

Been following this group for a few weeks now and decided to jump in. I had bunion surgery, hammertoe, plantar fasciitis and tarsal tunnel release, all on the right foot on Feb 26. Have done really well except for falling twice and putting a lot of pressure on my foot trying to keep from falling. I am approaching week three and actually have more pain now than I did at first. Sutures are out, thank goodness and I am still no-weight bearing. I see the surgeon Friday and will probably go into a post surgical boot. I keep thinking I should be further along but I have to consider I had four procedures on one little foot! I am 63 years old and it is not easy getting around. Hubby rented me a knee walker and that really has been a big help. Happy healing to all!

    Joan,

Sounds like you still need time away. They never understand it.  Some people are up and moving faster but depends on the type of surgery for sure.  Glad your Dr. is on your side. Keep doing what your doing and get better soon. Forget about work as it will just STRESS you and that wont help the healing process. Think happy thoughts and be nice to you.

Saw my chiropractor today and he told me that I was still walking and standing as if I had a bunion. Gave me an exercise to do to straighten my ankles. Something to watch out for once you get the hang of walking again !

    Hi All,

    Thanks for your messages.

I had my occupational therapy telephone assessment today. It was weird discussing what I do at work because it seems such an age since I was there. The nurse recommends that I just do shorter days for 2 weeks- 5/6 hours instead of 8 because I would be tired and uncomfortable at first.. She also asked me about my mental state while I've been off because many people get depressed after about 4 weeks. I told her I have been very happy at home having all this rest!

Joan-don't let them bully you. If you're GP gives you another certificate then you are entitled to the sick leave. They wouldn't think any more of you if you struggled back to work.

Well done to everyone for doing all your exercises despite the pain, especially Bob for all his work at the gym!

Happy Friday all! Bunion Babe Mel here!  Had the 4 screws removed on Wednesday and spent a couple very painful nights, but today am feeling so much better. I am trying to be cautiously optimistic, but today I ran an errand and I did not walk with my usual limp, despite still having some pain from Wednesday's procedure and wearing this horrible hard, flat hospital shoe. I haven't walked without a limp since before surgery Jan. 8!! I am so hopeful that the screws in my foot were the reason for the limp! I'll know for sure in the days ahead.

Rena - Thanks for noticing I was missing in action! I think having that searing pain again made me retreat into a shell.

Patricia - Happy 6 weeks! You're getting your cast off Monday? Just know your foot is not going to feel like it belongs to your body initially. I only wore a cast for 3 weeks, and it was the strangest sensation when it came off.  That and seeing the scaly skin! (Which thankfully becomes silky smoothe once it's all off!)

Joan - So sorry you are being bullied to come back to work.  That is wrong on so many levels, but especially when it is coming from your own manager. That's the last thing you need, with all you've been through.

Jenny - Week 10! Yay! Hope your walks continue to get longer and less swollen!

Kim - My limping has also created a ton of lower back pain, and my right hip feels like I need a replacement at this point! Walking with a limp definitely throws off mechanics elsewhere. Ugh!

Bob - So sorry to hear about your friend and his/her untimely, tragic passing. I hope your visit with Mom went better than anticipated. I'm sure your recent return to the gym is a meaningful mental health boost!

Anita - Hope you enjoyed your chicken that you cooked yourself, even if it did wear you out! Love chatting with you on FB chat!

Eileen - Glad your swelling seems to be subsiding!

Carmen - I look forward to running again as well but am so glad riding a bike is a pretty comfortable, effective (and fun!) way to get some cardio.

So thankful for all of you - people do not understand, nor can we effectively explain, what we have endured.  I actually had a co-worker say she wasn't going to give me sympathy!! Anyone who knows anything about me knows full well the last thing I want from anyone is sympathy. But sometimes you just have to consider the source! Remember that, my fine, bunion-free friends. cheesygrin

    ATTENTION EARLY SATURDAY RELEASE!!

    WEEK 7 DAY 3

Due to early rising and the need to get to the gym for my workout I am informing all the ''BUNION BABES''  to make sure we keep moving forward and keep the momentum going.

Today was a hard emotional day with funeral, PT, gym, mom duty and ended with a nice dinner out with girlfriend Annette. Glad to see for the most part everyone is making progress, This is not an easy process,

PT was hard today, Really pushed hard and felt the gratifying pain. Was happy with the end result today. It's not easy so don't expect a cakewalk. Keep going after it. If any of our ''BUNION BABES '' are struggling,, It will get better. JUST GET IT DONE!!!!

Tomorrow I am shooting for an hour cardio on the stationary bike, light resisitance. I do have some nagging back pain from the unbalanced walking.

Ill end with this, Without everyone here I wouldn't be where I'm at today. I am grateful for all your support.

Rena, Sneakers have been on 3 days!!!!

Anita, Joan , Kim, Eileen, Mel ( Spice girl ) - Keep it Rolling !!!

Have a great Saturday Bunion Babes!!!!biggrin

      Week-11/12

Back at work 5hrs a day. only did 4days . Really exhausting.

I thought by going back and taking it easy it would be ....easy

On light duties, but walking to bus stop and walking the long corridors makes foot very sore at end of day

Have good supervisor that I say "Just taking a break" he smile and says "Sure Be take as long as you like." Bless him

Have to let you alll know the operation has not worked for me the big toe is sloping in and no matter what i do to stop it it has a mind of its own.

1st physio this week and he looked at me very sympathetically.

Informed me that the op doesnt work for everyone and said it looks like Im 1 of them.

I will ring the consultant next week to see if I can get an earlier appointment with him.

To say I am devastated is an understatement

      Keep going everyone

I love being a bunion babe Bob, everyone certainly giving me some great advice re work, I will suggest a 4 hour day for first 2 days, moving on to 5 hours over 2 weeks, I will say that to doc if she asks for suggestions.  I know for sure that although in work they will say, rest if you need to but this/that needs to be done today.   Be, I know, you need to take I to consideration travelling time too.

Thank you everyone for the comments, I think if I was going through this on my own I would be depressed.

Mel, Kim limping does hurt, it will get easier, walk slowly, sometimes got to say to myself , right, stop, walk slow with small steps.  Trying to re train myself.

Off to to a communion now, must go and get my glad rags on.

Hi Be....I feel your devastation. I may be in the same boat as you.  I feel I need to hear from those who are seeing their toes drift.  I am going to start a new thread with pics of my progress.  I hope you will comment there and post pics too. See you there !

    Morning Bunion Babes and Bob!!

    Week 6 Day 1

Time is rolling on by.This process is so long but moving on. Soon it will be all over with. Yesterday it RAINED all day long.  Made for the perfect day to stay indoors and do nothing, oh wait that is what I did ha ha. Nothing much planned today except excercies and walking some more.  Oh, I wanted to ask you all.  Can you move your Big toe without using your hand to help it out??I was told to do that and only did it once and now if I concentrate really hard I can do it. The brain has to be retrained.

Husband is working for a few hours this morning and then off to his  first Dragon Boat practice of the year and will be home around 2pm so most of the day is for me. The neighbours are having a birthday party tonight and have invited us but the stairs are too much for me so I am staying home. I will do the stairs tomorrow as its Mothers Day and I will be seeing my Mom. I havent seen her since Good Friday, which was 3 weeks ago. She does call everyday to let me know how she is doing. She is finally in the proper hospital, as of Thursday. Long story short she was really bad when she got there on Thrusday and they scheduled and emergence ECT on Friday.  She has had 4 now, and what a difference.  She will be having another 6 (that will take 2 weeks) and then how ever long they want to observe. I am think a month before she comes home. I so cant wait to have her back home and starting to live life happy.

Bob, take it easy. Your pushing way too much. Glad you enjoyed a nice dinner out with Annette.

Spice Girl Mel, you can walk the cat walk now, woo hoo, YOU GO GIRL.

Be, sure hope things get better for you.  Did you get 'screwed'. I thought I heard that if you did then the toe will not shift, but maybe I was wrong.  Hopefully it can be fixed without too much. You wont have to go through the same thing?? Hang on and wait to chat with the Dr. first.

Joan, isnt it wonderful to have all these wonderful friends on here. I cant imagine doing this without all of you. All over the world too. We have all shared so much, the happy and the sad but it is so good as no one else really understands us unless you have lived it.  Easy on the return to work.

To the rest, have a good day today and remember to be kind to yourself. This is a long journey and soon it will all be over.

    WEEK 7 DAY 4

Happy Mothers Day to all the Bunion babes who are Mothers. Hope you have the least painful day as possible

Extra shout out to  be and Rena who may be struggling with thier post op. Feeling your frustration.

Yesterday had some very solid pain due to Friday's vigorious PT. Hit the gym and rode the bike for 20 minutes. Not the hour I expected.

Today I will be getting the gym in and heading out to the nursing home to get mom and bring her to my home for Mother's Day. Very Blessed and grateful.

To Joan, Spice girl Mel , Anitagirl, be, Rena kim, Carman, Eileen, Jenny, let's do our best to enjoy this Mother's day as much as possible. If, capable, we have to get some sort of excersise in.

Let's face our difficulties today, certainly not them them master us!!!!

    Have a blessed day!!

Bob we had Mother's Day in march in the UK, Spain had Mother's Day last Sunday but I hope those of you celebrating today have a lovely time as mothers or with mothers.

I also overdone it yesterday I done a little shopping  in the morning and was at a communion from 1pm to 11 pm. Daytime was for children with bouncy castle and games took my 4 year old grandchild and 4 month baby,  we were kept busy all day, but hey the kids had such a great time, by evening, mummy had collected the kids from me and we enjoyed some adult time.  Paying the price today, foot is sore but I am also exhausted

The sun is out though and I am sitting in the garden  with my foot elevated.

Rena I hope you get a solution to your toe problem soon, let's hope it can be fixed easy.

      shout out to everyone .

      Have a great sunday

    Week 6 day 2

The walking is getting a little better. Trying to put more weight on the crutch closest to the good foot now in an effort to hopefully get rid of one crutch soon. It will still be a while as I dont have the endurance yet. Been walking about 7 times a day a 5 min walk everyday. Today I am saving myself for my visit with my Mom at the Hospital. IT is my big outting but my mom is worth it. I havent mastered stairs yet, but with hubby's help I will try and if not the bum works too.  The hospital has so many long hallways to master. I am totally expecting a swollen foot but that will mean that I actually pushed it and I think I need to. Will see how it goes.

Its a beautiful sunny day here today. Yesterday was cold, raining and periods of snow. It was pretty to watch from the comfort of my couch.

Joan, sounds like a big day for you yesterday. Too big actually. I am worn out just reading about it. Take care of your foot today.

Bob, enjoy your day with your Mom, she is precious. Take it easy at the gym but then you wont listen anyways, oh well.

HAPPY MOTHERS DAY to all that celebrate and have and are Mothers today. Sorry we missed it Joan. Strange how different countries celebrate at different times, but the fact that they do is important.

Its another day, so celebrate and think about how far we have all gone. One day at a time.

Gorgeous day here today... 19 deg and not a cloud in the sky.  Am going to my first barbeque of the season celebrating Mothers Day at friends so that's something to celebrate! (Yup...husband and kids are doing all the work)  Cold beer, good steak, excellent company....what's not to like? So back to baking some wonderful microwave brownies to take.  Also remembering my own mom in particular today.

Despite the fear about the what the final result will be, I am encouraged by the healing process and the fact that I can do more most days.  As Joan warned, the challenge is not to overdo it.  Thank you all for the special mentions.  The panic is over.  Now it's time to move on !  So grateful for you all....

Have a great Sunday all !

Had such a lazy day today, and that has so

helpef my foot back to strength, and me too, I actually feel great, I am feeling just about recovered, and very positive at WEEK 8 - 4 days.

Still got numbness in around old bunion site and can't do the full toe crunch/curl but it is getting there, sure I am even walking without a limp and not having to think about how to walk properly.

    Yipee Mrs Happy here.

Keep going everyone, tomorrow is going to

be better, one step nearer your goal
