Hi Guys, I joined a year or so okay when I was first diagnosed and haven't really been on here since, however recently I have been feeling really low about all this... Anyway I'm just wondering if anyone has ever had bleeding but not just in stools?! I'm a bit concerned whether I should go to hospital with it?! Been going on for couple of days now, worse in last hour or so....

Hi Catherine, sorry you feel rough. Increase in blood output is related to a flare, so your colon is more inflamed and sheds bloody tissue. Are you on meds? especially corticosteroids such as Prednisolone? these should improve your symptoms initially. Have you been on these before and have started to reduce doseage? If so good idea to go back to higher doseage.

The important things now, in my experience, is keep hydrated, and if the symptoms dont improve soon get down to A&E as you need to be careful not to become too malnourished or anaemic. Your GP will prob not be open until Tuesday but you can ring an out of hours GP and get meds prescribed if necc.

The information on this website is good.

Obviously don't bother with ringing 111 as no use.

Good luck, A&E will not mind you going in and best place to get urgent blood tests done.

    Sheila.

Thank you, I haven't been on steroids since I was first diagnosed a year and half ago.... I'm on 4g Pentasa daily.... It seems to be under control a bit now just worried me as not happened before, I'll keep an eye over the weekend and head to out of hours GP or A&E if gets any worse.... I'll call dr and get an appointment to check bloods on Tuesday...

      Thank you again x

    Hi Catherine,

LIke Sheila, I'm very sorry you're feeling low at the mo. If I understood your post properly, you seem to suggest that you are passing blood from somewhere other than just in your stools? Not wishing to be over-personal, but if that is the case, may I ask where else are you seeing blood?

Seriously, if you know UC you know what she is talking about.

Seriously, I've had UC for the past 4 years and my question still stands. I have bloody stools and plenty of mucus during a flare-up, but haven't had bleeding from anywhere else. Perhaps you will be kind enough to educate me further?  Peter

It's not bleeding from else where on my body, it's just bleeding even when I am not going to the toilet...

Sorry if I misunderstood you. she means blood from the same place but not always accompanied with stools.

Catherine, glad you feel better. That is one of the problems with this disease it can be so up and down and just when you think you have got it sorted it comes back and bites you in the bum. Symptoms and meds and doseages and side affects etc vary from time to time in your journey. Keep positive.

When my son was first diagnosed, as an athlete, he contacted Steven Redgrave and got some support from him as he felt so surprised to be so fit and clean living and yet so suddenly unwell.

I would say though that I wish we had contacted a specialist hospital earlier as he was unwell and not really treated well enough so ended up having an emergency op. Some do cope on the meds some don't.

I wish all of you the best of luck. He is fit and strong again now and no regrets.

      Have a happy Easter.

Sheila, Thanks for your post. I clearly misunderstood Catherine's original wording (a trait I generally seem to have in abundance). On reading your explanantion, it immediately became clear. Apologies for being a thicko!!  Regards, Peter

Sorry for my misundersating, Catherine. My fault entirely. I do get small amounts of bleeding, and then discovered that it was from my 'piles'!!  I wish you well. KIndest regards, Peter x

I suggest you see your GP as soon as you can! I suffer from UC and often pass quite a lot of blood during a flare up! You won't know what the problem is until you are examined. No point worrying, will only make matters worse. Have it checked and then you can get on with sorting out your problem! Worry and anxiety itself can often be the problem. Good luck and let us know how you get on!

    HI guys,

Just a quick update. My GP appointment was cancelled last week and I have since had a written warning from work, has anyone else experienced this from there work? Just because I have had more than 3 days sickness in a year (its a rolling year so I fear it will never go below 3).

Anyway off to see the GP today, hoping to get a new referral to a different consultant in order to gain some proper help and support.

Its still good to know you guys are here though.

    Hope your all well.

    Catherine xx

Hi! It could be something like a (pain-less) fissure or hemorrhoids. Don't dismiss them - little devils. I had a painful fissure and it totally freaked me out the first time it happened. And fissures, as we all know, though painful, are something much less dangerous than UC.
