Help!!

Hi there,

I am hoping that someone can help me, I have been experiencing a lot of kidney pain after eating, especially high protein meals, ie; meat, which I don't do a lot.  This lasts for a couple of hours, the other symptom is sweet smelling urine.  I keep going to the drs but my urine dip test always comes up as perfect (no sign of infection, blood etc), also I have been tested for diabetes.  I don't want to use dr Google as it always seems to come up with horrible scary stuff!.

I would love to hear from anyone who has suffered this and can shed any light?

Many thanks

    Hi Joanna

Sounds like it could be digestion prob rather than kidney... if it is on your right upper side could be gall bladder, if on the left could be stomach acidity.

Your blood and urine tests have ruled out kidney problems.

I have CKD 3 and have neither of your symptoms.

Could just simply be you dont digest meat very well.

    Hope it all settles x

      Hi Jane

I think you maybe right about not digesting meat very well, I am very grateful for your input.

      Thank you

    Hi Joanna

Meat takes between 7 and 8 hours to digest, it’s a lot of work for the digestive system. You could try nutritional yeast instead of meat as that has all the B vitamins. Have you been tested for protein in your urine? a tell tale sign is when the urine looks frothy, it’s indicative of protein, which could be a kidney issue. Like Jane stated, it could be gall bladder. problem is it’s very hard to distinguish what causes these pains at times, had a lot of them myself, like you, I’ve had a lot of kidney pain, but also upper right/left quadrant pain and pain between shoulder blades, along with chronic Gastritis

Thank you for this info Gillian, I will look into the nutrition Al yeast, although like I said I'm not a big meat eater. I did have my gallbladder removed a number of months ago and have had a history of gastritis.

      Very best wishes

To put your mind to rest I suggest you ask your doc for a full Renal/liver and blood count test.  If you get gut rot after eating meat it could be a number of things going on and it would be worth your while keeping a food diary to see what you eat and when you get flare ups with pain and, equally, when you don’t.  It might not be meat but could be wheat based products (sauces etc) can also causes bowel probs too.

    Good luck
