Hey guys after years of excessive hair growth, weight gain, and irregular periods I finally was told I had pcos. I’ve actually complained about these problems since I was about 13 and doctors would tell me it’s just because I’m young everything will balance itself out as I get older, now 21 and I just found out after going doctor to doctor. My question is, is pain normal I am having pain on both the right and left front side lower belly area and I don’t understand why it hurts or what to do about it. I am feeling nauseous and have not had my period in 5 months I took so many pregnancy tests this morning and last week and all of them are negative so I know it’s not pregnancy. Please help I am very new and uneducated with this sad

I was diagnosed with pcos when I was 25 although I had symptoms from very young. I didn’t get my first period until I was 16 and then didn’t have proper periods until I was 18 and went on the pill. You need to shed your womb lining otherwise you are at higher risk of cancer. I would recommend going on the mini pill (progesterone only) rather than the combined pill, because if you have weight issues the serious side effects are more likely. Before I went on the pill I used to get really bad tummy ache. I still have suffered bad period pain but at least that is for a couple of days once a month. If you go on the pill for a few years it should regulate your periods and hopefully help with the tummy pain. Ask to speak to a specialist pcos doctor or nurse. I didn’t find out anything about pcos until I got an appointment with a really good nurse who gave me loads of information about hormones, low GI diet and insulin resistance.

My Doctor is not very educated in the pcos area she couldn’t answer my questions and when they saw my prolactin hormone was up she said it wasn’t normal but I just found out with pcos it is normal. I have no idea what it means to my body with my prolactin hormone being high but what pill name should I ask for? My doctor was trying to put me on a form of birth control pill but there’s a possibility of weight gain so I have not taken it at all

There is less risk of weight gain on the mini pill. I was on the combined pill and I used to put on about half a stone which is equivalent to 7 pounds. I don’t know if your doctor would rather you go on the combined pill because it is better for the symptoms of pcos, it is just more risky, I developed blood clots on my lungs (pulmonary emboli) which has been very distressing so that is why I am suggesting the mini pill. I am not sure what the names are for the pills but if you say you want the progesterone pill I am sure you doctor can recommend you one. If you do go on the combined pill avoid Dianette and Yasmin they are the ones I took. I can’t help you with any information about the hormone prolactin, I was just told I had too much androgen and not enough estrogen.

They are the ones they recommend for pcos but they never warn you about the side effects. If you struggle with your weight the side effects are increased as well. It also gives you depression, anxiety and mood swings. Did your doctor tell you the reason for pcos is because you are insulin resistant? Have you been given a blood test for that? It lasts 2 hours. if you are, they can give you metformin, it apparently helps with the symptoms of pcos. You can’t drink alcohol with it though. It helps curbs your appetite and rebalance your hormones. I never gave it a chance because I suffer with bad acid reflux and it made mine worse.
