Help..a desperate mum..Chronic Constipation in my 10 year old

He has been constipated for 4 months now..All the tests and x-rays shows normal he is on an extra fiber diet and a daily laxative and daily bearing down exercises to stimulate the muscles and nerves in that area. I don't know what to do anymore, we used an anema on him a couple of times but he hasn't passed stool naturally by himself since the last anema which was 14 days ago..has anyone had a similar case with their own children, it's a very distressing situation for our son and us..he also experiences tummy spasms now and then and they are very painful and each scream from him breaks our heart to pieces..we ended up in emergency room a couple of times because of the pain, but tests showed all clear.

Have you been to see the doctor with your little one? I am surprised you have not been prescribed suppositories for children. I am sure there must be some help out there.Go to the doctor or go back and make a nuisance of yourself if necessary because this is not good for a 10 year old. I expect you have tried all the usual stewed apple, prunes, plums etc.

Let us know how you get on.

I have taken him to a pediatrician and this was their advice to continue on the exercises and fiber diet but it's not working. They don't like suppositories they prefer anema's and they said stop that as well to see the progress!!!

Well dont give up and remember it is the squeaky wheel that gets oiled. In other words as I have said go to the doctors and insist they do something.I am thinking of you.

I had the same trouble with my 10yr old over the past year or two. She got to the point where she hadn't moved her bowels for five weeks. Took her to A&E and was prescribed movicol which didn't really solve the problem. She had a follow up app with a gastroenterologist which was great. He prescribed 3 days treatment of picolax and dulcolax, this is dynamite and really shifted the blockage. If it hadn't worked she would have had to have an enema. While on this treatment she was really loose it was like water, the next day she emptied her bowel and blocked the loo there was that much! After that she had 2 maintenance doses of movicol and dulcolax just at night. She goes to toilet 20 mins after meals and is doing brilliantly. She hasn't soiled her underwear for a few months now which is great. She will have to take movicol for about a year but she had no problems. There is light at the end of the tunnel. Hope this helps a little. Good luck.
