Help - abdominal pain that goes away when lying down

I'm a 22 yo female who was recently diagnosed with IBS. My doctor is not entirely sure that I have IBS though, as my symptoms are not typical of the condition. Around 2 weeks before my period is due, I begin to experience (at random times, usually when I'm out and about rather than at home) a pain in my abdominal area that feels like it is being squeezed. It sometimes feels like a shooting pain, and my mid section can be tender to the touch, but only during one of these 'attacks' and not at any other time. The pain will usually start around my belly button and spread all the way up to my stomach and down to my lower abdomen. The odd thing is that this pain will go away completely when I LIE DOWN!
Eventually, the pain will go away if I lie down for long enough but if I do get up, the pain will come back. My doctor finds my symptoms to be very unusual, and put me on Colofac for IBS which has not helped. I also have heartburn around this time of my menstrual cycle and am on Somac. I have had heartburn (few times a month) since I was 14yo. I eat a high fibre, healthy diet.
I'm really hoping theres someone who has had similar symptoms before who might be able to shed some light on whats going on!!

I would recommend requesting a laproscopy to check for endometriosis. Especially since your symptoms are before your period starts. I just had surgery on my colon. 4 inches was removed due to deeply infilitrated endometriosis. Also had 5 more lesions found and removed within my pelvic wall via laproscopy. I was having increase abdominal cramping, constipation, bloody mucus with stools and tenemus every month before my period for 2 years.

I'm a teenage girl and I have been experiencing almost identical pain for the past few years, but I don't know exactly when it started. I'm so glad I found this since I've never met anyone with the same sort of thing! I've seen a few doctors and they have never come up with anything, they just say that I might have IBS but never give me anything for it. The pain always starts in the morning pretty much immediately after I get up, and it's always on week days when I have school. (Occasionally I'll get it if I haven't had enough breakfast, but other times completely randomly.) It doesn't correspond with my period however, so I don't know if it has anything to do with that for me. It feels like someone is squeezing my stomach really hard, and often in waves. No heat or any pain killers help, the only thing that ever helps is if I'm laying down and completely relaxed, and even after that my stomach is still sensitive for the rest of the day. It is always worse at school, in fact I rarely get it when I'm home. I think the fact that I am moving around a lot and doing lots of different things doesn't help with the pain, and it often makes me feel sick and overheated. It has been so bad in the past I've had to been collected early from school, just because it only ever helps if I'm relaxed at home. I had the pain today from pretty much instantly after I woke up so I got home at the usual time at 5 and had to lay down for an hour and a half and watch TV, it's the only thing that ever helps. I have always had problems with constipation since I was a little girl, so I've been told it might be to do with that, I also often think it might be a form of anxiety since I can get anxious about the tiniest things and that's what most doctors that have seen me think it is. However I really wish there was a way to cure it, but it's hard to do that when no one really knows what it is in the first place.

That really does sound like anxiety. The best way to fix it is to relieve the anxiety - meditate, reduce stress, yoga, breathing exercises, etc. If none of that helps, then you may need to consider anxiety medicine.

I hope you will still return to read this reply...I have had this problem since I was 15. I was first told it was colitis, but later they just called it IBS. The pain comes on my left side, just below my ribs but above the level of my belly button. it can come on quickly. it can last hours...but usually the cure is laying down. laying on my left side/stomach with one leg brought up to my abdomen is also a position that helps relieve my pain. Ask the doctor for a medication called Bentyl (the generic is Dicyclomine). it is an anticholinergic (similar to Benadry). I call these my magic blue pills. I travel with them, and always keep a few in my purse. they make you sleepy (like Benadry), but if i can't stop the pain, I take one as a last resort. They dry everything out and calm the spasms of the colon.
Yes, I have always gotten them nearer to my period, and if i wear binding clothing. any inflammation near my colon that causes pressure on my colon seems to set off an attack. I have stretched out across the car seats and laid down on the floor to get relief when I got an attack while at work or out of the house, and I didn't care because the pain was so bad. And, I have never had that pain coincide with constipation or diarrhea (although I deal with those issues as well).
Research the gut biome. Get on track with vitamin D, probiotics and prebiotics. Read and research all that you can on food as medicine to treat and repair your colon and intestines. I am 50 and these problems have only gotten worse over the years. Diverticulitis (even more painful), and other maladies can develop if you aren't careful.
Trust your instincts on how you feel. Eliminate foods that cause inflammation. If you're like me, stress goes right to your gut. You being here tells me you are researching and looking for truth. Research prebiotics and stress. Pay close attention to what you eat or drink. fizzy drinks and alcohol can set me off. spicy or acidic foods....and sometimes very fatty foods can set me off. My attacks would happen a couple times a month...These days they come more often.
Keep searching and good luck to you. I know exactly how this feels. its disabling at times.

hey mon
i have had this exact same problem for gears and years i mean like since i was about 20.
i know many people online that have had same issue why im here not to share what it was for me and i reckon try this priblem solved,
Stop eating all gluten and dairy for 1 month
see how you feel after that. I tried to convince myself it wasn't that because its too hard to give up (im a chef so not easy at all)
You will possibly ignore this advice becasue its easier to fix with a pill but there is no magic pill. the pills will make you feel worse other symptoms.
I no longer need to lie down in the weirdest places. oh, and lost a good bit of weight also

Yes it seems that my issues, which are very similar as above persons, seem to get worse when I eat sugar, dairy or breads. Try steering clear of dairy, gluten, starchy foods like potatoes, and definitely sugar. I have been eating almost no sugar for 4 months and felt almost no pain during my periods. but this last month i have eaten kind of a lot of ice cream and candy and my period this month has been so intensely painful. I have not had a period this bad before. I agree with JerseyLem!

Hi there, I identify with this, have experienced it since I was a young teenager. it is crippling, can't stand up straight and have to lie down immediately and it dissipates in seconds, only to come back if i return to a vertical state. I am 45 now, was diagnosed with PCOS in my 20s but was never sure what caused this, whether it was digestion related or menstrual. I have never met anyone else who suffers with this so it is nice to know I am not the only one! Anita

Honestly it sounds like endometriosis. Doctors regularly misdiagnose endo as IBS, because frankly IBS is the "catch-all" or go-to diagnosis whenever a woman is having abdominal pain and they can't identify the cause. The fact that your pain is closely tied with your menstrual cycle and the hormone surges that naturally occur at regular monthly times, sounds exactly like endometriosis or maybe even PCOS. Unfortunately it is difficult to get an endo diagnosis, as the most reliable way to diagnose it is to have a laparoscopy. But I would highly recommend looking into that as the most likely possibility for the cause of your pain.

I have this as well, I noticed it really flares up when I did not get enough sleep, and my fiance noticed that it happens before or after my period. Could just be exhaustion and hormones. I also have pain during sex sometimes. I did notice the these pains started a day after i had sex recently and I am due to get my period, maybe it is endometriosis, but i do notice if my body is tired my symptoms show up as well, and laying down is the only thing that helps.

Hello,
I have similar symptoms right now. It has been this way for almost a week. It seems to be more painful when i eat sugary things. The pain is all on my right side, front and back and all over my pelvic region. 4-5 days before my period it started and i only get relief from the pain when i lie flat on my back for hours. once i get up, it slowly gets more painful until i finally go lay down again. But if i eat, then it becomes painful even faster. i have cramping, radiating squeezing/pulling aches all throughout my right side and pelvis. I thought i might be pregnant at the first because my period was almost not there at all, but on the 6th day of this pain, i had severe cramps and pain and nausea and after a bunch of period flow, i felt better, but abdominal pain is still there and my regular period is finally here. all throughout this week i have had either constipation or diarrhea. I have not gone to a doctor as of yet, but I have an upcoming appointment. if the pain gets any worse, i will have to go to emergency room.
Has anyone had this issue with these symptoms? Do you have any idea what it could be? I am currently trying to get pregnant and I am afraid that maybe something is seriously wrong with my ovaries or uterus.

Mine started after I stared having to pre med with 2000 MG of antibiotics everything I went to the dentist. So it is a gut flora issue. Been 4 years off antibiotics, so I guess it is not going away. Terrible stomach pain for 1 to 2 days, then a couple days of gas. But like everyone else, goes away after couple minutes laying on my side, when I get up it comes back. I have figured out what foods make it happen so if I am very careful, no problem. Whole grains of any type! yogurt! I suggest you keep a food diary. Interesting the foods that are suppose to be good for your gut cause problem. No problem with veggies, beans, high gas foods. I don't understand why laying down makes it go away, but looks like it is common.

I have had the exact same symptoms for probably 20 years. It's so weird and intermittent, the one post about it being more on the weekend shook me because i find it only happens to me in certain social situations, usually when I'm excited to see my friends, so I thought maybe it had to do with anxiety in some way? Now it seems to be more often, and when I'm at home. ive never taken Accutane, and I'm four years into menopause, so no more period. Just like all of you, if i lay down for long enough, it goes away. i have also found it eventually turns to gas, so maybe it starts as stomach gas?
