Hi Guys,

I seem to have got myself in a bit of a pickle and dont know what to do! I was diagnosed with UC about a year ago and it dont matter what meds i try nothing seems to work. ive tried Messalazine, Sulphasalazine, Asacol suppositories, diet changes no booze no sugar no spicy none of it matters im still rushing to the loo 8, 12, 14 times a day. Well if that lot is not enough heres the problem! I work on a building site and over the last 3 or 4 months i have limped from one flare up to another. It came to a head last week when i messed myself one time to many by not making the welfare facilities in time. This horrid disease has cost me my job, i had a bit of a breakdown on site and my partner who happens to be my son said Dad you cant do this no more, you cant put yourself through this every day. So........ does anyone know if we can claim disabilty, incapacity or whatever its called i have not got a clue. I have worked all my life on site and this sh*t has taken that from me i dont know what to do can anyone help please.

    Hi Terry

My name is Jon and my wife Marie is suffering with UC, The first thing you must do is get the support from your GP in the form of a wriiten statement as to your illness then claim PIP which is personel independence payment it takes a while to be processed it may be worth trying ESA first

Good luck Jon and Marie 13689

I don't know how this would be viewed in the UK, but if I were you I'd check with my consultant and a lawyer to see what can be done.

      Hi Gabe,

Im self employed so i dont think a solicitor could do anything for me so i will go see my GP first and see if he can point me in the right direction.

      Thanks Terry

      Hi Terry,

The reason i suggested a lawyer was not so you can sue a compamy but find out what government programs might be in place for people with medical disabilities.  Probably an employment lawyer might be right.  Also check on the internet about government programs for people with disabilities and see if you qualify.

    Hi 2daloo,

Welcome to the club no one wants to belong too smile

First off ESA is actually very easy to apply for.

    A basic overview.

    https://www.gov.uk/employment-support-allowance/overview

    Application information.

    https://www.gov.uk/employment-support-allowance/how-to-claim

I have claimed a few times when things got bad. I felt guilty at first but over time I realised I have a serious illness and that's exactly what this benefit is for.

Tell the doctor you cannot work right now, your symptoms are very bad and you need rest. You'll get a doctors note the same way as when you need one for your employer(if you've ever worked for someone else as you said you were self employed). I've never really had any issues my doctors usually start with a month then see how things go from there. You usually get sent an envelope with a form to fill out and you send it back with your doctors note. When the doctors note runs out they send you another envelope that you can send the next doctors note in or hopefully you get signed off and can get back to your life.

Hang in there we've all been where you are now and you aren't alone.
