Help! cough for 6 weeks+, irritated throat

Posted , 3 users are following.

Started with fevers for a week, extremely sore throat couldn't eat or drink. Developed congestion and a cough with mucus (yellow) and chest pain. Doctor prescribed amoxicillin twice after the congestion and cough came back after the first round of antibiotics. Throat is still irritated and I'm still coughing, I'm worried this is not normal. Was told to go for a sputum test yesterday so haven't got the results back yet. Does anyone know what this is?? I doctor hasn't been able to see my throat since two weeks into being sick.

Hi Nic, sorry this is so late but, did they check for strep throat? It would be treated with antibiotics but, they usually do a throat swab...2 rounds of anti-biotics can mean you need a different type of med or need to take it longer...or that it is VIRAL which means it will have to run its course....The chest infection can be separate as you can have a viral infection and the phlegm & congestion creates a bacterial infection, that needs anti-biotics, you wrote this about 6 days ago, hopefully you're feeling better by now, if not come back here...sorry you got no response BEST WISHES💒🌈🎶♾☮💞🐾🍀

Hi, thank you for the reply! I forgot to mention I'd had a throat swab as well as a blood test in the first week of being sick and fevers etc. which showed no strep or mono. Since I posted this I did the sputum test and it did not come back with anything. I'm now waiting for the results of a nasal swab and have been told to go for a chest x-ray tomorrow. Just really anxious now that its something serious as I still have a feeling of something stuck in my throat when I swallow, doesn't help that its so hard to see a doctor in these times! I've also now been prescribed another antibiotic that I had taken about two years ago when I had pneumonia. Thanks for the advice, and any other thoughts would be greatly appreciated! 😃

    Hi Nick

It sounds very similar to what i'm going through now. I started getting a sore throat in early March and put it down to possible Covid. Symptoms of a 'rhaspy' feeling in the throat which makes me cough fairly regularly. Coughing never seems to quite hit the spot though. After 5 weeks of endless flu meds i finally spoke to a GP who put me on a weeks course of Antibiotics . Finished the course and still the same. Getting a little anxious now and received and sent a swab test this morning. Really is concerning that i cant go get checked out. I wonder if its down to anxiety, i had suffered a tight chest in the past from anxiety and i recently read it can also affect the throat.

Anyway, hope goes well and please keep us posted on this.

For anyone who's interested, I was sent to get another sputum sample and it finally came back with Haemophilus bacteria (I'm not even sure what type it is) but I've been put onto tetracycline to see if that helps.
