Help dealing with restlessness and feelings of insanity

Hi all. I have had clinical depression for quite a while but in the last few months I have strong feelings of restlessness and I feel like I'm going to go insane at times. I can't sit still and I get these overwhelming feelings of having to go somewhere or do something. I am constantly moving my legs up and down. I started on 50mg sertraline in November last year and this was gradually increased to 200mg which I have been taking since early January. I have been attending CBT sessions almost every week for the last couple of months but I'm not sure it is doing me any good but I will stick with it for the another couple of months to see if it will help. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Orderly Mo72.

    Hi Gomo72

You say you've been on sertraline since November. Has it helped at all with your depression?

I am not a doctor but I developed severe restlessness (akathisia) on two different ssris, the first was citalopram and the second was sertraline. I am off them now. I can't say whether the sertraline is causing your restlessness but it could well be. Ssris can cause this.

This is difficult for me to answer because I don't want to give the wrong advice. Are you getting any benefit from the sertraline? If not, it may be worth considering whether this med is right for you. Perhaps talk to your doctor about the restlnessness.

Propronalol is meant to be good for akathisia so it may be worth mentioning this to your doctor. Hope this helps.

PS, if you do decide that sertraline isn't right, a SLOW taper is best.

    Hi meteor63.

Thank you for your advice. I appreciate it. The sertraline has made very little difference to my depression. I have spoken to my GP about the akathisia but he said that the side affects from the sertraline should have settled by now. I feel very anxious a lot of the time and he said it is this that is the most likely cause of it. I have always been a fairly active person and have ran 10ks, half marathons and full marathons and attended bootcamps over the years but I hadn't done any exercise for over 4 months until I started running again a couple of weeks ago. I have almost zero motivation at the moment so having the enthusiasm to go out for a run is tough. I will definitely speak to my GP about the propronalol. Many thanks.
