Help. Diagnosed with Barrett's Oesophagus. Suffering with a globus throat sensations.

I'm getting desperate to find some relief from constant reflux. My Barrett's is small and no cell changes. The lansoprazole should be sorting the acid issues. Yet the problems I have are right up in my throat particularly the right side. I can eat and this actually helps. But the sensation of pressure at times is unbearable. I've had a Baruim swallow which showed nothing. I've been told that even if acid is controlled the weakened valve allows other substances to come up the oesophagus which then irritate the muscles around the valve in the upper oesophagus. Feel isolated as know I no one with this condition and need some reassurance

You are on the right site, as many of us have or had this problem. I had a Nissen Fundoplication 5 weeks ago and no longer have reflux or the throat sensation and only a slight cough.

I hope you can become less isolated once you have made contact with several of us. Sadly, its not an uncommon condition.

      Hi ,

What have you done as far as cough goes? PPI has decreased tickling sensation for me but I still have a horrible barking cough. I can't find anything that will fix it. The noise itself makes me cringe. I also get panic attacks when eating . rolleyes

My cough has just about gone, still have some first thing in the morning. I how have absolutely no reflux and no PPI's. I also have Barretts but post surgery, it wont keep increasing as there will be no acid to damage my Eospagus.

Its a long haul, but I think its worth a few months of difficulty in order to regain our lives.

    Hi Jackie,

so so sorry to hear you are struggling.  I too have Barretts and eating makes the pain go but within two hours I have pain in my chest and back.  I have had umpteen tests all showing nothing except a small area of Barretts and some inflammation.  I am currently waiting for an appointment with yet another specialist to discuss stretta therapy.  Have you heard of this?

    Best wishes,

    Lynne

Hi Lynne. I've not heard of stretta therapy. The only thing that's been suggested to me is surgery to make the valve at the bottom of oesophagus tighter. I don't really want this as knowing my luck I'll have complications. I can deal with some discomfort it's just when it's every day that it ruins your life. I suppose my main concern is that with constant reflux my Barrett's will keep getting bigger and the cells start to change. Keep in touch

      Hi Jackie,

stretta therapy is is a new treatment performed via endoscopy - if you search on-line you will find info all about it.

I have been struggling for 3 years with all this and it has taken over my life but we have to keep on punching.  I understand your concern as I feel exactly the same and worry what damage all this pain is doing.

      keep mithering Doctors!

      Best wishes,

      Lynne

Hi Lynne yes I've googled this therapy. Sounds fabulous and I definately want to discuss this with my gp when I next go. Are you actually going ahead with this? Let me know. Like you I'm completely fed up of feeling like this. How long have you known about your Barrett's? Three yrs ago mine was just a 3mm and my last scope it was 1.5 cm. so all the medications don't seem to be doing their job. Keep in touch

      Hi Jackie,

Yes, I'm hoping this treatment might help and I have an appointment with the specialist on 30th of this month - I have waited 5 months for this appointment but used to waiting now!  3 years ago my first endoscopy was normal the last scope I had in June this year I have 2 cm of Barretts and inflammation.  Just hoping and hoping this treatment will help me as I am sick and tired of it all.

are you taking the usual medication?  I take Esomeprazole and domperidone but still have pain every day always after eating - all pleasure of eating has gone for me and especially at this time of year with Christmas on the way I find it very difficult.

      Best wishes,

      Lynne

Hi Lynne. You've given me so much hope that there is something else out there other than surgery. I shall def mention it to my gp when I next go. Yes I take lansoprazole. Ranitidine and gaviscon. I have a very uncomfortable feeling in my throat which feels like something is stuck in my throat. This happens day in day out. Followed by intense pressure chest pain etc. It's so annoying and all the time I worry about the Barrett's. I hope so much that this procedure is effective. When do think you'll have it done?

      Take care

      Hi Jackie,

      I understand how you feel.

will have to see how my appointment goes and if the Doctor thinks I am a suitable candidate for the procedure.  Hoping and praying they can help me.

      Best wishes,

      Lynne
