Help, do not know if I have herpes 2 for over a month now really worried.

About a month ago I had unprotected sex with a guy that apparently has herpes, at the time I was not aware of this and stupidly had unprotected sex with him two nights in a row for only about 5 minutes if not less. Now I’m terribly worried I might have it, I went to get checked a week after and my results came back negative but I heard that the results would not even be accurate then? I am going back next week to get rechecked but until then can anyone tell me if this could be herpes? I got a yeast infection after the intercourse but I have always been getting them anytime I have sexual intercourse and it did come back as a yeast infection but the irritation was never like before no signs of sores except vaginal discharge like a yeast infection along with itchiness but I assumed all of that had to do with a yeast infection since it did come back that I had it plus no flu like symptoms . I am just hoping that he was not asymmptomtically shedding for I did not even know herpes is spread that way.

    Hi michelle

    I can understand your anxiety

Difficult to say from the symptoms but if he was having an outbreak you will likely have caught it. However if he was between outbreaks, which is far more likely, then you are almost certainly in the clear.

In my opinion the issue with "asymptomatic shedding" is that some people with Herpes only get very mild symptoms so they could get an outbreak and not notice it. Even so it's still the case that the safe time between outbreaks is much longer than the infective time with an out break. So the odds are on your side.

The testing for Herpes has some frustrating problems. The best test is to get the area swabbed during an outbreak. Trouble is that the virus will only show up during the first 2-3 days, so if you're a bit slow getting to the clinic you can get a negative result even when it was a Herpes outbreak.

Yeah unfortunately I do not know if he was having an outbreak or not I wanna say he wouldn’t be and would be okay to have unprotected sex since I have heard he has had it for a couple years but I can’t say forsure. But wow really that does help a lot I thought asymptomatic shedding happens a lot throughout the year. I never had an actual outbreak so that’s why I did not go to the clinic right away and how would 2-3 days be different than a week? If you know any info on that.

Regarding the 2-3 days thing, I discussed this with one of the sexual health Drs at my local clinic. He said that while you often have visible sores for a week or so there was no virus present in them after the first 2-3 days. Why - I have no idea?!

The up side of this is you're unlikely to infect anyone else during the later part of the outbreak.

The down side is that if you're a bit slow getting to the clinic for the swab you can get a false negative result back even when it really was a Herpes outbreak.

This is exactly what happened to me when I was struggling to get a diagnosis
