Help for 8 year old

New to seizures, Eight year old child had a 6 hour seizure, twitching arms and legs,

Typically what most would think of as a seizure. This is at least

The second one he has had. His mother refused to give him the

Meds. He had trauma at birth causing cerebral palsy. From my

Reading, I believe that 5 minutes of seizure is a medical

Emergency, and that two six hour seizures meets the epilepsy

Definition. I believe 911 should have been called. Mother has

Religious objection to medicine, and insists doctor told her

Not to use medication, even though she has some. Am I wrong

To think the child is in danger, since mother did not involve medical

Intervention.

Hello. My son has epilepsy. His is completely controlled by medication. He's not had a seizure since the meds kicked in 4 years ago. His seizures only lasted between 30 seconds and 3 minutes. I was given drops for under his tongue if he had a seizure lasting more than 5 minutes. There are many types of epilepsy, my sons is quite mild in the way he has a seizure, his isn't the jerky movement type, but only because they are short and effect a tiny part of the brain. If it were to spread further in his brain (which it could) then he would have a full blown seizure.

I think the child you are talking about definitely needs medication. I'd say more than 5 minutes is a long seizure!

    Good luck.

    Hi Nancy,

may I ask what your relationship is to them?

shes being dishonest about the doctors advice about using meds, after all he prescribed them.

shes obviously in denial or has a religious conviction that in her mind won't allow her to use them.

this child is in danger and needs an epileptologist and not a neurologist.

    (that's personal experience)

guaranteed some will disagree with me about that but it's my opinion.

you are obviously in a very tough situation and I would be interested in knowing more....I can see its much more complicated than it sounds.

Thank you for your replies. I am the aunt of this adorable child.

Witnessed this seizure over the holidays. Live 100 miles

Away. Mother's "religion" claims to cure disease, therefore, no

Medication is needed, in her opinion. Her denial extends to

Other areas. Child is being home schooled. Mom claims he is

Reading at high school level, but I'm pretty sure he cannot

Spell his name. Mom stayed close by when I tried to work with

Him and the alphabet, giving him hints, etc. This was the first

      Seizure I have ever seen,

Although he has had them to a smaller extent for quite some time.

I believe I will contact the mom and plead the case for modern

Medicine versus the dangerous looking outcome I'mean beginning

      To suspect.

    Nancy,

i too had smaller seizures for I believe around two years and to make a long story short developed into tonic clonic seizures a year and a half ago.

its a shame she is in such a state of denial.

Religious beliefs are not going to cure this young fellow.

If indeed this is epilepsy it effects those of who have it are affected in different ways....no two are alike.

Hes in need of professional diagnosis and help.

it will not go away on its own and his quality of life will diminish and you'll see it first hand , it's miserable and no way to live.

Youre up against a brick wall and no way around it.

im sorry for him and you as well.

2 questions, how involved do you feel you can get?

Id like to know what this religion is called that claims they can cure him?

    Allen
