Help!! Hearing loss with middle ear infection

Posted , 4 users are following.

Hi, I started off with a virus last weekend, but on Monday I had terrific earache as well as swollen glands and rash on chest and left ear with weeping.  Then the same thing happened on Wednesday with my right ear.  I've got partial hearing loss with both infected ears and both ears are still weeping. I have ringing in my ears as well. My GP couldn't even see the ear drum in my right ear because it's so swollen.  I've been taking 500mg of amoxicillin, 3 times a day for 2 days now but there's no improvement with any of my symptoms  I'm really worried about my hearing loss.  How long will it take to recover?

    Morning Suzanne,

Did your ear problem start from a cold ?  So glad that you're on antibiotics, give them

chance to work.  Also do your ears feel blocked ?  Sounds as though you've got

Eustachian Tube Dysfunction, the weeping of your ears could be a small perforation

in your eardrums due to pressure behind it.

Once the antibiotics take hold hopefully yoi'll feel better.  The swollen glands is due to

the ear infection.  The Tinnitus (noise you can hear) is probably due to your ears being

    blocked.

Hi Suzanne,  it sounds like the same thing that happened to me last May.  I had a virus and woke to reduced hearing, like I was under water.  My ENT doctor put me on a high dose to reduce swelling and hope my hearing would come back, but it did not work.  I have severe hearing loss and now have hearing aids.  I hope you have better luck and I wish you the best.  Hang in there.  Pete

Hi, thanks for replying. Today will be the start of day 4 on antibiotics. My ears are no better, neither is my hearing. I went for a walk in the woods with family yesterday evening. I couldn't hear the birds singing. That was quite a low point for me. My ears are now really itchy and yes they feel blocked, especially my left one.

    Hello Suzanne,

Without scrolling back to read your posts.  Do you take a daily Antihistamine.

I take Citrizine and it stops the itch that I get too in my left ear.

Also are you the lady who lives in England ?  If your ears are blocked you

won't be able to hear....same for me until I sorted the problem with the

    medication I'm using.

Can I buy Ctrizine over the counter at boots or Lloyds?  I think the infection is going as I'm not getting fever and chills today.  I feel normal apart from earache which is much duller than the screaming pulsating pain.  My ears aren't weeping today.  I've still got ringing and whistling in both ears and hearing is just as bad, but I'm getting faint clicks in both ears so am wondering if that could be the ears repairing themselves.  I'll wait until Wednesday when I run out of antibiotic and go back to GP if hearing hasn't returned.

Hello Suzanne,  yes I think clicking could be a good sign and crackling too....can still take for

ages to unblock though.  Did you ask for Flixonase Nasules ?  Sounds like you've had a very

      bad ear infection.

Think I may be coming down with a cold.  Felt off colour today and a bit achy.  Dread making

a lot of mucus from a cold as it will block my ears.  How I hate the Winter months....awful

      weather, high bills and illnesses.

Citrizine can be bought in Boots or any chemist.  Might be cheaper to get on prescription

      though.

Hi, thought I'd do a catch up.  My left ear is almost back to normal, but my right ear is still hurting, can't hear properly and ringing/whistling/whooshing pulse.  I was on amoxicillin for 12 days in the end.  The eardrum had ruptured but now the GP says the canal is narrow so can't see anything.  I'm being tested for lupus because of other symptoms appearing in the last year.  I just hope that my right ear is not a victim of it.
