HELP! Hip/knee pain (+ other symptoms)

I recently posted on here about my 14 year old daughter, she has been suffering from pains in her hips and knees for a few months now. Some days the pain doesn't bother her, other days she can hardly move! There is no pattern to when/why the pain occurs, she constantly limps (even on days when she doesn't really have any pain) Her leg also seems to go into spasm leaving her stuck to the spot for a few minutes. The pains started in her left side, but soon started to affect the right side (way worse than the left side) Her right hip bone also seems to jut out further than the left. We have seen 2 doctors, the first said it was growing pains, the second sent her straight to hospital for x-rays which came back normal. It seems to be getting worse, she used to struggle through the pain and get on with everything (this has always been in her nature) but it is now having more of an affect on her day to day life. She can hardly ever go out with friends, has had to take a letter to her school as she can't cope with P.E anymore, and has been unable to take part in her dance classes. She did try at her dance class on Monday as she said her hips and knees felt ok, but her teacher ended up pulling her out. I was there and it was painful to watch her! Every move seemed to be such a struggle for her! Even lifting her arms and everything! She just looked knackered! A few of the other Mums were also commenting on how she looked! Anyway, since her last appointment, we have noticed a few other little things, she has developed 2 strange roundish indentations on her legs, one on the side of her left thigh, and one on the front of her right thigh. She gets no pain if I press on them, but it feels strange! Very soft, as if there is no muscle behind them. The muscle (well.....I THINK its the muscle) on the bottom left hand side of her back also seems to be bulging out. She has also complained a couple of times about discomfort in her chest (she said right from her shoulders to the top of her tummy) and is getting puffed out more easily than she normally would. Everything just seems so much of an effort for her. Anyone got any ideas or advice????? Its stressing me! I called for another appointment to see the doctor, but they can't fit her in for another week.

    Hi lippylinz,

I have been experiencing the same pain as your daughter. My hip has been hurting for 3 days now and I struggle to walk and run. I haven't been to the doctor's yet. Also, I hope your daughter is better now seeming as this was over a year ago. If not, hopefuuly, she'll be better soon. I would be very happy if you could tell me what has happened to her and if it is something I should be worried about.

    Thank you!

Hiya, I needed to reply to this as when I read it my heart poured out to you and your daughter and the stressful time you are going through. My son who as symptoms just like your daughter was diagnosed with Joint Hypermobility 2010. His symptoms got worse when he joined secondary school year 7. He his constantly in pain with knees, hips, wrists, ankles and feet. Bone pain on and off in legs. Sometime groin pain. He was told he would need to keep taking laxatives as he started to become constipated and he had never had constipation until 2014 when he was given antibiotics for water infection that was never a water infection. I was told 2 years ago when he was getting viruses back to back that he would have to ride it out. This was because it was viral not bacteria. We had to go back again and again due to constant headaches, eyes were deteriorating child cannot see properly without glasses on. Was told he had stomach migraine. Migraine all different types of migraine. Which was total rubbish. He gets puffed out easily. He was told he needed to lose weight.

I have been to see Diabetic consultant, Kidney Consultant who found incidentally a cyst on left pole of kidney. After a scan as we thought he had kidney problems before a private consultant found it was his hip.

He was seen an allergy specialist for nut allergy only diagnosed two years ago. Consultant could not believe he was still alive. Thank god for the anthistamines.

He as seen neurophysiologist for epilepsy as he kept blanking out and not remembering things and still forgets things. Results came back normal but they would as these tests should have been done over four or five days.

He his having physiotherapy and ad been told by rheumatology that it will be a long term thing.

He was referred to Hydrotherapy 5 weeks ago as they said it would help but his swimming as deteriorated since last year and he almost drowned in the pool because his arms and legs could not cope.

I now have to get in contact again with Rheumatology as no one as taken any xrays of his bones.

Paediatrician said it would not be advisable as it would bring up all sorts of things. Very annoyed but may have to go privately.

He as one more appointment with Endocrinologist who state it may be an hormone problem.

I personally think my son also as a nerve problem.

He his constantly burning up at night. Then sometimes his body goes cold and feet very blue. He also cannot feel the heat on his skin when showering and also as developed Uticaria. At first he thought they were pain rashes.

Look at Hypermobility website as you will find a lot of information. There are also many forms of Hypermobility.

Long and short of it you need to see a Paediatrician and ask to be referred to Rheumatology. Not that anyone cares much.

Talking to other mothers at Hydrotherapy. It will be a long battle. Not just medically but also school. The Rheumatologist my son is under won't make a diagnoses until he gets physio report and Physiotherapist cannot do so unless they cannot go any further with him.

I have filled out an EHCP form and a EHC form for him in order to get help this will include many professionals from relevant agencies.

My gripe is my son was told he would have to live with the pain. Which he is doing quite well. As he his sensitive to many medications

Another thing my son had a lot of blood tests done. All with different things showing and never consistent.

Blood readings do not count for much and even though showed a trace of Rheumatoid Arthritis they dismissed it.

Argument now is why is he in pain. Joint Hypermobility is not suppose to cause severe pain. Benign Hypermobility does. Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and Marfans Syndrome have been mentioned by orthotics consultant, paramedics and NHS Direct doctors. I have had to call out emergency for my son lots of time. All they say it's muskeletol. Pain in chest, breathing. Joints popping out just by doing littlest things. Flat feet which does not help the hip. I am still fighting and fighting school with regards to attendance. It's going to be a long journey I am afraid to say.

Hope this helps in getting you started. Keep fighting and don't feel your on your own.
