The virus can last dormant in your body for some time. People often have herpes and are symptom free. Hence why it continues to spread.

Did your doctor have you get your blood tested? If not, I'd definitely ask! HSV 1&2 IgM and IgG.

Yes if you haven't had a blood test definitely get one but never get IGM it's not recommended and very unreliable...request IGG test specifically!

if your swab was positive then she is telling you you are positive but It's worth it...remember an IGG test not IGM. If the blood test is positive which if your last exposure was over a year ago and your swab was positive six months ago it definitely should be. If she didn't tell you what type, they can type it by blood. FYI If you had any type of other exposure like oral sex during that time, that can make a difference as well.

I recommend you go to a hospital and take a culture test for genital herpes if you have an reoccurring outbreak or a blood test for HSV-2 if you don't have an outbreak, the symptoms can be mild or painful (itchy, red ulcers, tingling or stinging) I recommend you to tell your next partner I promise you it won't hurt to do so, being honest will get you accepted in a someone's life instead of lying about it! a lot of people have it, it's common and it's just an infection not a disease, you have to take care of your body that's all. You'll be fine, you still can have children, and live your normal life just don't have sex with outbreak, it is contagious while active
