Help...my hamstring " popped"

Hi all

I'm 9 months post op...been doing ok... relatively speaking...still limited on the stairs but my other knee isn't great...exercising regularly in gym on bike and cross trainer...swimming and doing water aerobics..I have noticed my hamstring in the operated leg lately has felt tighter the last week or so....I stretch it regularly and today i walked about 2 miles. unexpectedly felt a popping in it with immediate pain a while ago ...like a deep cramp now....Did it just pop or move....how would I know if it's more serious?? I'm going on a trip this week so this couldn't come at a worse time..... I need to be able to walk....has this happened to anyone else?? TIA...

Hmm. Your hamstring muscle is attached to your heel by a large, strong tendon. Not easy to break unless by serious injury like skiing injury. If that tendon broke, you'd be in a lot of pain and wouldn't be able to walk at all. Has to be repaired surgically.

Hopefully this is NOT what happened.

Can you walk at all? How badly does it hurt when you try to point your toe down?

I can walk....it's sore.....like a cramp in my calve at rest..sore when I walk.....may be something else ..another tendon....it felt like it popped......like an elastic snapping back..I know it's not torn completely but something happened.....I am icing and elevating it

I think DCweather sounds like he has had experience with this. I would follow his advice.

I thought I'd written this for a minute till I read the bike and cross trainer bit! Do you think you might have been overdoing things a bit? I'm at almost 6 months and I have started to be able to use a seated bike. I've been getting pain in the back of my hamstring and a sort of flick come pop on the lateral side of my knee which my physio thinks is the lateral colateral ligament or the tibio fibial tendon or band I think she called it. Stairs still a struggle for me but that is largely due to lack of flexion in my other knee (90 deg only). It seems that not a lot can be done quickly but I've been advised to roll on the outside of my thigh from hip to knee with something like one of those roller foam things you get at the gym or by rolling something cylindrical along the length. I think this is to try and stretch the ligaments and tendons a bit. I also try and stretch the hamstring a bit. A couple of times when it has "clicked" it has locked half bent and just gradually eases off. Feels like a trapped nerve to me but they don't think so. Could be a bit of scar tissue getting in the way a bit.

Not much help but I wouldn't worry too much, maybe just ease down a bit.

no that's v helpful....I just do 10 mins on each machine...fairly gentle..just to get back to aerobic exercise again...I swim or gym 6 days a week....to try control my weight, which I struggle with and to keep my arthritis in check as well as keep my knee moving...maybe i do overdo it.. have a roller so maybe its time to go back to my old exercises which i stopped about week 12 when I went back to work. I stretch my hamstring in the water mainly and it always feels tight.....just concerned I could have damaged something. One of the things I was looking forward to was doing the stairs normally but like you that hasn't happened despite my working on it!

      thanks
