HELP NEED RECOVERY INFO FOR A VAGINAL HYSTERECTOMY

Posted , 5 users are following.

I am scheduled to have a vaginal hysterectomy in mid July. and need to know what to expect during the first week then the second week after having a vaginal hysterectomy.

We are renting a cottage (very comfortable) across the street from the beach beginning 10 days after surgery.  This was not a surgery that I had planned for until a few weeks ago.  I don't want to cancel since my prolapse makes me so uncomfortable even though I have a pessary.  I urinate 8-10 times a day and 3-4 at night.  I have noticed a lot of postings dealing with how much pain and discomfort there is after surgery.  Would appreciate your experience with recovery  TY

I had robotic hysterectomy on Dec 15 and traveled 5 hours away with my family to my parents on Dec 23.  I developed extreme lower back pain 1 week post surgery - hysterectomy aggravated a preexisting low back condition. If not for that I would have felt much better than I did.

Hi Fenway Park. I had VH 2016. I had to have paracetomal and codein every 4 hours for upto about 4 weeks after op, if I was late with my meds, like during the night, I knew about it, the pain was quite bad. I bled for about 2 weeks after. I also developed an infection at about week 3 and had antibiotics. The worst thing though was the tiredness, you must rest, because you can't see you're wound it is easy to think you are not too bad, but you're body will let you know if you have done too much, as I found out, you will feel wiped out. Although you must rest, you must also take a couple of short walks a day, Increasing the time as the weeks go on, to prevent DVT. The hospital should give you info on what you can and can't do, they will also give you exercises you must do. You cannot drive for 6 weeks. They told me recovery would be 6 weeks, but it was about 12 weeks before I felt completley better but maybe because I had an infection, everybody is different. Make sure you sit on a pillow when you are traveling from hospital an holiday. My prolapse had got bad so it was the best thing I did. No lifting, pushing, carrying anything heavy, no hanging washing out etc, no standing for long periods. One of the best things I bought before op was a grabber/reacher. Good luck and accept help off everyone and enjoy getting waited on, it doesn't last forever! x

Hi Fenway One thing I forgot to mention was after the op I became very constipated, despite a good diet and taking stool softener, this is very common it is down to the anaesthetic or gas they pump you with. I phoned the ward after about five days and they told me to take 2 suppositries, I wish i had only taken one at a time but the relief was real!! x

I had a vaginal hysterectomy several years ago and I was in pain for a couple days but if everything goes well and you take your pain meds and get lots of rest the first few days you should be fine.  I went back to work after two weeks and I’m a hairstylist.
