Hello I am 27 and over the last two years I have had extremely bad acid reflux even to the point of being sick! Earlier this year I was sent to a specialist and underwent an endoscopy where I was diagnosed with HH I also was told I had a stomach infection and I have been on two types of acid blocking tablets but neither worked! I went back up see my consultant and was advised to have the operation but first I need a ph test I am now on a long waiting list for this before he will operate, however I have started to get bad pains near my ribs sometimes it's like a stitch type pain others are like a sharp pain and if sitting up it's almost like something gets stuck in my ribs! Also I feel tired all the time bloated have hiccups burping central chest pain and a "lump in my throat" which makes it hard to swollow! Please if anyone has any advice or if they have any of these symptoms I will be so grateful

I started having problems just over twelve months ago. Only ever when I ate though. Pains in my upper abdomen, really bad chest pains which went up into my shoulder and into my neck.  I could only relieve my pains by vomiting and getting all the food back up. I had many tests including endoscopy,  ph test and CT scans. It was discovered that I had an Hiatus Hernia which was large as over 50% of my stomach had made it's way through my diaphragm and into my chest. I was in agony every time I ate and my specialist agreed to operated as in his words, he believed he could improve my quality of life. I am now in my second week of recovery and doing really well. I am following the mushy diet given to me by the hospital although I already feel that I could go back to normal eatin. Apart from the 5 small wounds from the keyhole surgery and tenderness from the stitching of the diaphragm I'm doing really well. Hopefully after I've healed I'll continue my life pain free. Good luck with your journey. I really hope they sort you out too. 🙏

I know it's easy for me to say but please try not to worry too much. I too read lots of horror stories on different forums but I think it's mostly a case of people don't tend to comment on forums unless things aren't goin well and they need to find answers, as did I myself when I posted on here yesterday.  I read that I may never be able to burp again (a terrifying thought when you've always been a gassy person), May never be able to be sick and may always have trouble swallowing and getting food stuck. Maybe I'm lucky but none of the above applies to me and I suspect many others too. Look forward to and beyond your op to when you can start and enjoy your life again. After all you're too young not to. Take care xxxx

It does sound like classic hiatus hernia. I had mine operated on in March and am off the mulitple antacids and the under rib pain etc has all gone.  It does take time to recover as with any surgery and everyone is different with their reactions to the same.  Post op, i've never had any problems with not being able to belch, haven't had the loose bowel that the doc had warned about and within 2 weeks, stopped taking any sort of antacid relief.  It took me a while to get to grips with the foods that would go down without a struggle and those that would cause pain but overall, it was absolutely worth having the op.  Best of luck.

Glad to hear your op went well and your recovery has been good too! Thank you so much for your reply it has put my mind at ease knowing that you have the same symptoms as me and are now doing well after your op! I was told the eating part is one of the most difficult things to handle I was told to eat only soft or get those milkshake drinks off the doctors for times of difficulty x

I have had a HH for over 2 years now, only a small one but I've been back and forth to the hospital time and time again!. I have constant pain under my right rib, terrible bloating, heartburn after any food, burning pain up through my back and shoulder blade, still having tests cause they say the hernia wouldn't give me this pain!!! When I read things like this it helps me to know I'm not imagining the worst!. I know how miserable this makes my life, I wish you all the best with your opp x

Hi Lesley you have all the symtoms I have apart from the shoulder pain I haven't had that but have had all the others! I think your symptoms seem pretty normal as it's the same as mine and my consultant confirmed that it was classic symptoms! X
