Well I had some numb toes, pain in my hip and turned out I had a couple disc that were bulging and also that I had stenosis . But consider you spine like a stack of donuts and a straw inside the middle . If it bulges or moves eith way it can rub  the nerve . Thats all it takes and usually if you look at the mri report you can see how much each disc is bulging . Something is affecting your nerve !

Thank you for your reply, all doctors and chiro I seen and a specialist physio all said it was a prolapsed disc when I went for results  mri back in july he told me that he couldnt get the  scans up on his computer so I saw nothing but said it was normal, all this started when I tried carry a heavy item at arms length when I got home that day I had the worst pain I ever felt in my ankle lasted about 15 mins shock took over and felt sick and sweating..now im stuck  with this pain since that day as dont know who to  try see next

Ya know when you get an MRI there is a written report . You WANT this to look at . A gp may not really know what the severity of the problem is .But a surgon does and even the surgons read what the expert said about the mri . In my case the spine surgon showed me when the pressure on my spinal nerve was . A prolapsed dic is squeezing your nerve either from a prolapsed disc/ herniated disc or it could be a stenosis . But it sounds like you basicly blew out a disc and it is directly pressing on th nerve . And a disc is only supposed to move so many mm . My doctor took 3 xrays after the mri . . Bending foward, straight up and bending backward . He said mine was moving farther than what was ok . Threre are a lot of doctors that will blow you of or turn you away . You have to really let them know how bad it is . This is not the time to show them how well you can take pain .  A lot of doctors will not do anything unlewss you ask them too . I usually say , can you fix it ? I hate that when doctors say " oh , its not that bad " Ya, not for them !

if you go to where they did the mri they can give you a copy and you can study the report . I know they try the therapy bs first but when you start getting numb thats a problem .

Well there should be a written report . You don't really need the actual mri . The written report has all the measurements on each of the vertebrates and how much each disc is bulging . Here in the us , they just give it to you to hand over to the surgeon . Thats when I take it home and make a copy  .I do that with the dvd that usually has the mri on it also . Since you usually have the doctors appt. on another date . It is amazing how your back is not a big deal to our doctors . But they don't have to go through life, try to sleep, work, have a relationship . A lot of doctors are just gears in the machine without a personality .I think when you see the doctor you have to really ask the hard question. Write them down like why does it hurt . can you do something about it . If you have numbness a nerve is being squeezed . But this is a specialty doctor you need . A regular orthopedic doesn't always do spine surgery thats why if you see the actual surgeon they can see right away or read in the mri report what is going on .In my case it was both the prolapsed disc or herninated disc and part of the bones in the spine squeezing the nerves . But write down what you want to ask before you see the doctor because time flys when your talking to them .I hope this helps . I was in terrible pain and I know a lot of other people are just like me . All of this can be repaired if you find the right person .

Im in England it works differently over here doctors are not allowed to just send people for mri no more has to be physio or consults decision

I understand , here they call that a hmo . The the fact that you  are still in pain would tell me your mri is NOT normal . Because if you have pain, there is a reason .It is a real shame that you have to push our doctors to do their job .

if gp means general practioner he probably does think it looks fine . Problem is a specialist is needed to look at it . It probably looks normal to 9 out of 10 people . A spinal surgeon looks at it and can see there is a problem . There is not pain for some explained reason, its just that doctor can't see it . This is something that really sucks . You have to be pushy when it hurts or nothing will be done . Its easy for a doctor to say move along. In the us they have a saying " the squeaky wheel gets the grease " and unfortunitly its true . I went to a harvard trained doctor about my shoulder . He looks at the mri and says, " do you want a shot or something " I said I want it fixed  . I ended up leaving his office and found another doctor . He looks at the mri and says, " there is the problen right there . I said can you fix it and he says sure. It is am =n easy fix but the first doctor didn't care I guess. The bad thing is there are a lot of bad doctors out there and it isn't always easy to find out who is who . But don't just go home and live with the pain . If you are preisitant they will get the picture
