Help....Sertraline, reassurance.

Hi everyone
Started taking Sertraline 10 days ago 25mg. It's making me feel very poorly.
Read an article in the Daily Mail that says AD are not much better than a placebo.
Looking for reassurance that they work.
I can't see the point of taking them and making myself ill if they are not going to work.
Need something but really unsure what to do xxx

I know it’s easier said than done but try and not read articles about antidepressants. It is irresponsible for them to say they are just a placebo effect as they have taken a lot of us out of some really dark places. When I first took Sertraline, it took me from not seeing the point of carrying on to the most positive I had ever felt.
I think the main reason AD’s get so much stick is because they take a while to kick it. Most doctors will say they take 6-8 weeks but if you read messages on here a lot of us see improvements even later than that, say up to 12-16 weeks. I know it isn’t the most encouraging to hear how long they may take to kick in, but at 10 days in I would say you are in the worst of it now. The first two weeks are really really difficult but I promise it does get better. There were so so so many times I just wanted to give up because I thought why am I taking these tablets that are making me feel so much worse but if you can get through it the benefits in the long run are so worth it. Keep going you can do it x

How long were you on each dose as you increased? And have you had any good days along the way?

I would definitely agree not to read too much into articles like this. I try to avoid reading about AD's as much as possible, except on here where I'm talking to real people about their real experiences.
Unfortunately AD's are not like antibiotics or other medications, they can often make you feel worse before they make you feel better. It can take a couple of months for you to really start seeing any real effects, although I think most people see the side effects start to lessen off after a few weeks.
Are you taking them in the morning or the evening? I was feeling very ill when I started, but then read on here that a lot of people take them at night, I switched to taking them at night and that made a real difference in the side effects that I was feeling. It helped me get through the worst of it to see it through to the other side.
Please don't give up on them yet, try and stick it through the side effects, because there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Of course they're not 100% effective, they don't work for everyone, but they do seem to work for the majority of people on here, myself included.
