    Hi Cathy

I was diagnosed with MD in both ears approximately 20 years ago. As time went by the tennitis has gotten worse and is very bothersome especially when I am in very quiet places. At night when trying to sleep, libraries etc. Also I have found that loud noises can set it off worse as well.

I have lost about 30 pet cent hearing in both ears and can hear most people but have trouble with specific sounds because the buzzing in my ears cancel certain pitches. I am considering hearing aids to see if this well help or make things worse.

I know what you are going through...hang in there!! I will keep you posted to let you know if they work or if I hear of something else that would help!! You are not alone.

what meds are you taking to manage your MD?  Are you on Betahistine?  Have you tried using a sedative such as Ativan?  Ativan is known for having a calming effect on the inner/middle ears and reduces tinnitus.  It might be worth trying.  I take 0.5mg twice/day.  Ativan is not addictive at this small dose.

Hi, no not on much. A water pill and clonazepam for the anxiety of it all. What is the bethahast..? When I first got the vertigo I started getting the Gentamicin shots but they made me worse I just don't know what to what does the betahistine do

Oh my, Cathy.  In over 20 years of having MD not one of your ENT doctors told you about Betahistine?  That's shocking to me.  I imagine you live in the US....correct?

There is a lot of information on this forum regarding betahistine....comments from myself and many many others.  Please take the time to read it.  If you still have questions let me know and I'll be glad to go through it all again with you.

I'm also very surprised to hear that gentamycin was ineffective for you.  That's unusual but does occur sometimes.

Have you ever been on diuretics (water pills)?

Hard Tanner yell the Gentamicin shots made it worse I took three of them and the vertigo was very very bad the vertigo's under control now but the tinnitus is horrible Relentless and my left ear and now it started in my right ear 2 months ago I went to another ENT and he says the only thing that's going to help me is some kind of hearing aids I'm ready to just cut the nerve to all my hearing and I don't even know if that will work

Hi, what has worked for you as far as getting the vertigo under control?

I am guessing that means you don’t have any vertigo now?

      Thanks

Hey. The vertigo is not as bad as when it first started..

Maybe the gentamiacin shots in my left ear controlled that some, but not sure. Now on a fluid reducing med and take clonazepam. I'm totally miserable..

It is so so horrible isn’t it?!

I’m 30, a single mum and qualified as a nurse a year ago. My problems began about 6 months before I qualified, but it was as isolated vertigo attacks, severe ones but the next day I was ok and could carry on.

I’ve now been constantly dizzy and unbalanced for 9 weeks. I had to go back to work after 6 weeks off as I simply can’t afford not to work.

Watching my 10 year old daughter suffer because of this as well as me is just heartbreaking, it’s making her life miserable too.

      Good luck x

Gosh it wants me to study to be a specialist in the field of meniere's, but too old, I cannot believe no research on this disease, all the docs just throw up their hands and say nothing can be done...

Taking diuretics to remove excess water seems to help reduce the tinnitus.  But becoming too dehydrated can make me feel lightheaded and get headaches.  It’s a very tricky balance.  I’ve only been suffering for 4 years.  I am 37 and very depressed that my life is ruined bc of this disease.  I can barely work and I never do fun activities anymore.  I just stay home if I’m not at work.

J.. I know how you feel..this stuff is debilitating. Does not make sense that there is not enough research about meniere's.

Hi, I hear your pain. I’ve had 3 strokes and each time my hearing gets worst and the tinnitus increases. My hearing also increases. I get vertigo also. I’ve been going to a vertigo specialist and learning different e excises to help. I see so many people are on betahistine and say it helps. I’m asking my ent next week. I have to keep my blood pressure as low as possible as when it goes up vertigo hits. Also I broke down a bought hearing aids which seems to help. Good luck to you and all of us! Keep us posted. Blessings, Chris

This is a debilitating syndrome that does not get the attention in the medical community that it deserves.

I had a serious bout in 2012 and was in bed for 60 days -- and still have recurring episodes.

One thing I learned:  avoid aspartame (found in many diet drinks, some sauces, gum, etc.).  It is a "trigger" for me.  The 'Net is full of testimonials to how good aspartame is, but most of them are from the industry.  Just drop it from your diet for a week and see if that helps.  (I've found some literature that says aspartame is a known neurotoxin and attacks the nerve sheaths... but there is little "science" behind my suggestion.  But it worked for me, and costs you nothing to give it a try if you have Meniere's.

Good luck and I hope things get better for you.
