    Hi.

I had my surgery November 20th. I just got the go to start weight bearing. It hurts so so much for the first few minutes but not so bad after that. I also use crutches but mostly just for balance. It's taken longer than I thought but it's coming. I'm hoping by the end of February I will be walking with no help. Fingers crossed.

Hi Brooke! I was keen to start weight bearing so I never went that long without weight bearing. I think one thing that helped me a lot was practicing weight bearing in the shower. I don't know if you have a railing in the shower but I would hold on to that and attempt putting as much weight as bearable on my healing leg. After a while I was able to put more and more weight on my healing leg and would begin to do calf raises in the shower while holding on to the railing. While using crutches, I would walk gently with the heel of my healing leg without putting full weight on that leg and that helped me get the healing process going!

all depends on the x-rays. your doctor when he check your x-rays should tell you when you should full weight bear.

never do anything without your doctors advice or approval. you do not want to cause a set back

push past the pain and discomfort movement helps the rehabilitation of your break if you need something for the pain take it to get you through

Are you able to get to a swimming pool and do some walking there?

It can really help while starting to weight bare because you are buoyant so there is less pressure on leg so you can practise without crutches. Start in the deeper end, and gradually work to where it is shallow so the water takes less weight. I did this while both trying to get to full weight bearing and then when starting calf raises.

I was just going to say the same thing. Physical therapy has been a huge help with me and i couldnt imagine trying to go without it. They have showed me how to walk properly again.
