Help with info about best mattress to purchase

Posted , 9 users are following.

Hi! I am posting for a dear friend who suffers terribly with fibromyalgia. She is needing to purchase a new mattress & is overwhelmed by all the information out there. Please, please if any of you fellow sufferers could let us know of your recommendations (both what you do recommend AND what you would avoid at all costs), we would appreciate the info tremendously! Thank you in advance! She is needing to do something in the coming weeks to month. Again, thanks!

Hi Teresa, firstly what a lovely friend.

So buying a mattress is no easy task, and when I went to buy one I tried a few mattresses. I wish I could give a good answer, I went for a memory foam mattress which had orthopaedic qualities for whatever use it had. I did lie on a few before deciding on one. Now I'm rubbish at this sort of stuff so my mattress sadly doesn't do what I need to and that's because I only went to one place and after a few beds settled with one. Tell your friend to shop around don't settle with the first shop you see. Lie on them longer than 5 minutes, move around. When I'm in a better position to buy again I will take my time.

Thank you, Oompa! We went today and let her try out a few and are going to several other stores in the coming weeks. She mentioned that she had seen somewhere that 100% latex is best and to stay away from composite. She is so very sweet, and I just want to help her so much, but I'm very limited not having fibromyalgia myself. I will tell her about your experience and suggestions. Thank you again for taking time to respond!

Hi Teresa. Finding a good mattress is not easy. My husband and I

recently bought mattresses for our teenage kids. We bought them

Serta Perfect Sleeper mattresses. Plush pillowtop. They are like

laying on a cloud. One big soft pillow. I was so envious of there new

beds. Until they slept in them. The plush pillow top holds heat. So

comfortable but also so hot. My daughter sleeps with a sheet and a

fan. I hear that there are ones out there that aren't hot like that, but

I'm not sure which ones. Just be sure to do your research.

    Hi Teresa,

I tried several mattresses, lying on them for 10 - 15 minutes in various shops, before deciding on one and in the end I chose a memory foam. I'm very pleased with the comfort it gives and it just seems to mould itself to my body.  Having said all that, it does give off a lot of heat which I've compensated with a much thinner quilt.

I dread sleeping in other beds now as I know I will hurt so much the next day.  Food luck with finding the right one.

Hi Teresa, Well personally I have found that my mattress needs to be not too hard so that I am comfortable. I have bought one that they recommend for posture which is firm but it also has the big cushion like top that looks like it has been added on. There are many kinds but I suggest you lie down on it for a good 5 minutes and turn over on each side and on your back to see how it feels. That is what I did. Getting the right pillow is important as well since we often have neck pain and it needs to have the correct firmness and softness as well. It is not as complicated as it seems, really. She will know when she finds the right one. It has a great deal to do with her own personal taste. You are a good friend. Maggie x

Hi Teresa! It's so sweet of you to help your friend with this. I am looking for a new mattress but need to wait a bit for financial reasons. One thing I've noticed is that some places offer you 30 days to try out the mattress. This might be beneficial because after laying on my last one for 5 minutes I thought it was good but after some time on it I felt pain. Also, they have now a cooling memory foam so you don't over heat. As with many fibro sufferers, temperature is hard to regulate.

Some even have the adjustable feature if she has trouble getting out of bed or if she needs her legs raised due to symptoms.

Like you said there are a lot of options....depends on what she wants and needs.

Teresa, it's very nice of you to look out for your friend. A mattress is very important. I found the cool memory foam mattress to be the best. My wife and I bought an expensive, Tempurpedic mattress with 20 year warranty. I bought one from Wal-Mart on line, it was the higher end "cool" foam mattress for our RV. It works as good as the more expensive one.

A comfortable mattress is essential, especially with Fibro.
