Help with underactive thyroid

Husband has under active thyroid.

Over last few weeks there has been lots of bbq. so lots of alcohol. After his 60th birthday and lots of booze. He felt that his thyroid was playing up. Now 3 weeks later, he is getting brain fogs, aching muscles, itching. We're wondering whether this could be effect of alcohol, or just needs his meds increased. His last blood test on 1.6.18 was the 5.4 and ft4 was 12.5. Doc didn t change meds then. He is feeling really rough. Would appreciate any thoughts. He has also started taken a bit of seaweed sheets.

    Hi ,

A tsh of 5.4 is still quite high and people should aim for 2 and below to be symptom free. Did he feel well before the birthday celebrations?

How long has he been taking the iodine? Did the symptoms start shortly after? You have to be careful with iodine intake, if the body takes in too much, it can react . Was he deficient in it?

Could it be a food / gluten intolerance? Some people have the symptoms you describe with this?

I know a lot of people who have underactive thyroid and are really sensitive to alcohol and gluten so it won't be helping the cause unfortunately. T4 seems low to me and if the other result is the tsh then that would suggest he is undermedicated. If Dr's refuse to up the dose try and get referred to an endocrinologist who may potentially be more helpful
