Hemifacial Spasm
Posted , 45 users are following.
I have just been diagnosed with Hemifacial Spasms at the age of 46 - since suffering from daily fluttering in my left eye. Thankfully at this stage it is still only affecting the left eye (I have had this since May last year) and hasn't spread anywhere else. I am beside myself with panic that I am going to end up abnormally deformed and disfigured very soon as it does start to include the rest of the face. Can anyone give a complete novice regarding HFS some advice. I only got the letter yesterday and don't see my Consultant until April and I am out of my mind at the outlook prognosis and what to expect. Is it really going to leave me looking disfigured permanently?

I live in the Atlanta area and am just starting to seek information re having my HFS diagnosed and treated. Can you tell me what clinic you have found in the ATL area that is well experienced in this condition. Many thanks, Richard.

I had MVD surgery about 6 weeks ago. I thought you may want to add my surgeon to this list if you can. I live in Philadelphia, PA and my neurosurgeon is Dr. Farrell at Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. Dr. Farrell is excellent! I suffered from HFS for alsomst 20 years and finally made the decision to have surgery. It's the best decision I ever made! I awoke from surgery spasm-free. Wish I'd had the surgery 10 years ago. Dr. Christopher Farrell is amazing. I highly recommend him to anyone considering MVD.

After over eight years of xonstant twitching, training myself to sleep on my rigt side, to exhausted at the end of the day to do anything, embarrassed to smile or talk in front of a group of people, smile in a picture with my two daughters, etc. The surgery was wort it.
Do you think that a neurologist would let a celebrity or politician go eight years without referring them to a surgeon?

My second choice doctor would have been Dr. Sekula in Pensylvania. Just google him and watch some of his videos. I hope this helps!

The surgery was not as bad as I had envisioned. Yes, the incision was longer that I thought that it would be and before I went to surgery I shaved my head. I only stayed home from work for approximately three months to recuperate.
After over eight years of constant twitching, training myself to sleep on my right side, to exhausted at the end of the day to do anything, embarrassed to smile or talk in front of a group of people or smile in a picture with my two daughters, etc. ... the surgery was definitely worth it.
Do you think that a neurologist would let a celebrity or politician go eight years without referring them to a surgeon? No. They would have them in the surgery room as soon as they could schedule it. I really doubt if the physician would prescribe Tegretol (Carbamazepine), etc. Not one of the medications that all of the neurologists prescribed for me helped.

I suffered from HFS for almost twenty years. I had Botox injections for nine years and wish I had never taken that route. Like you, it left me disfigured. The left side of my mouth drooped. It was awful. I live in the USA, in Philadelphia, PA. I had MVD surgery three months ago. I awoke from surgery spasm-free. I was in the hospital for three days. I just saw my doctor today for the three month follow up. I saw a wonderful neurosurgeon at Thomas Jefferson U. Hospital in Philadelphia. His name is Dr. Christopher Farrell. He is incredible! I highly recommend him! The recovery time is about three months. I feel great and am so grateful to be spasm-free. Contact me if you would like more information. Wish you all the best!
