Just comming up on 5 weeks after extensive surgery on hemmerhoids and glad it is all behind me. My bowel movements have become very irregular between soft and hard and when I have to go I need to be near a bathroom or I will have an accident and can't seem to hold it in. Is this nornal and will it settle.

I'm a week behind you, just approaching my 4th week post surgery. Can I ask, how many BM's are you having per day? I'm having about 5 a day, but they are all soft. This is a lot more than I was having prior to the operation. My sphincter too is still a bit weak, so I've been doing pelvic floor exercises - might work, might not.

Hope you get some answers, I've found a lot of posts on the internet cover the first week or so, but there is very little information out there for those a month or so on.

    Regards

I'm going to the hospital tomorrow to see whether I need surgery or not. How is your pain now and how long before you were back to your normal day to day activities because that is my biggest concern at the moment if I do infact need surgery

Well, I didn't suffer much pain, I think I was lucky there. But on about day 8, I started having about 6 BM's per day, with a feeling of needing to go quite a lot. I had surgery done on 11th Feb and I've been given a sick note until 21st March. I've seen some surgeons say 1- 2 weeks and you can get back to work. My surgeon said 3 - 4, I would say longer probably. I've barely left the house as I need to be near a loo. Most people on the forums seem to have the opposite problem to me of not being able to pass a motion though.

So to summarise, at 3 weeks 4 days, still not back to normal.

      Hope that helps.

Hearing that you haven't experienced much pain is encouraging because you really do hear a lot of horror stories on here and it's been shooting my anxiety through the roof! I'm quite fit and exercise a lot and stock to a healthy diet so on the pain from him hoping to be more like you (fingers crossed). I work from home so having multiple bms a day won't probably trouble me that much but I'm really hoping it's not the case. Any tips you've found have worked well for yourself during recovery?

Sitz baths are really helpful. I bought one from Amazon for about £8. Much less faff than running a bath (though I lived in the bathtub for the second 24 hours)

If you have people around you who can help, then that will be a benefit. You may feel isolated and unable to talk with people at home (they may not want to talk about bowel movements either) so chat with people on the internet in the same boat, it helped me.

I'm also sitting on a hot water bottle quite a lot too. I've tried to avoid pain relief medication as far as possible. Some of it constipates you, and some of it is bad for you if you take it for too long.

Thanks for the advice. Wishing you the best for the rest of your recovery.

Usually only one a day in the morning after breakfast and a few warm drinks. I sit on the loo with my feet on a stool and empty easily with only mild discomfort. The odd day I miss but never more than one day. My surgery was expensive so has me worried about control of bm. I ate alot of rich food at the weekend not usual for me and had a accident this morning which worried me, probably due to what I ate but a disappointment that icould not hold it until I got to the bathroom.

The the first bm two days after surgery was agony with alot of blood and pain but thankfully only once, plenty of laxatives to soften helped but wanted to come of them week 2 as it was too loose. Things then settled and only took them if I did not have a daily movement now on week four I am not taking any. My only concern at this stage is have I lost control as when I need to go I have to and can't seem to hold on. I am sure this will pass as I get stronger and more active. Forgot to mention I have multiple sclerosis and bowel movements are not my friend

One more thing week 2 I managed to pick up an infection even though I was being very carefull about cleaning and had two courses of antibiotics and a fungal tablet and cream to apply.

I would say 4 to 5 weeks to get over this surgery and start to feel more nornal. Saying that it would depend on how much work is required. My surgeon told me that I was lucky not to require two days of operations as mine were extensive so count myself lucky that he managed to get them done in one procedure.

Hey! So I went for my appointment on Tuesday and I don't even have a haemorrhoid! Turns out I have a fissure and the lump is a skin tag! I was given a cream called Rectogesic to put inside my bum hole lol which is meant to relax my sphincter muscle and allow blood to travel to the fissure so that it heals on its own. This cream is apparently successful in 70-80% of cases so I'm hopeful it'll sort me out and that I won't need surgery. The doctor put me on the waiting list for surgery anyway just in case but if the fissure is healed by then the surgery will just be to remove the skin tag. The cream seems to be helping as well no pain after my last bm and no muscle spasms!

Hello again, just wondering how things have gone for you over he past few days? It's my 5 week anniversary tomorrow and the BM are a lot less frequent but are now bloody.  Think that's due to the sphincter area not being as flexible as it used to be. I'll ask the surgeon when I see him on 13th April. Anyway, hope you've made some progress.

Hi I would like to share my experience of having a THD procedure for piles. I had my op with general anaesthetic just 3 weeks and 2 days ago.

firstly I have never experienced pain like it, I couldn't go to the toilet for 7 days although I was taking a laxative, then when I went I had two days with the runs, in all this time I had to stay near a toilet! I was dosed up with painkillers that were hardly even touching the pain. I have now in the last two days being able to sit down properly and the pain has now more or less gone. I am still having bowel problems with cant go and then the urge to go quickly! I feel like my piles are back, I have had three weeks off work but will be returning soon. I followed all medical advice, I showered 6 or 7 times a day to avoid infection. I  am waiting for a follow up appointment for post op but I will never have this operation again! Hope this helps anyone in this situation.

I'm scheduled for the surgery around 3rd -4th week in May. My doctor explained to me that the recovery is extremely  uncomfortable. I appreciate being able to read this forum to get an idea of what I'm in for. I had a major flare up 3 weeks ago and I was home bed ridden for a week so I'm guessing the pain would be about the same (HELL!).  Not looking forward to it but I have to get it done. Wish me luck. I'll keep u guys posted after the surgery.

      Hi Shaf

I felt exactly the same as you after my consultant said Halo or banding etc will be no good for me as it will not get rid of my prolapsed stage 4 internal piles and some more smaller internal ones- So the Big Cut it is! (Had them done private £2700 all in)

I am 66 and was kept in overnight as the op was not until 5.00 pm

Ive just had my "Slice and Dice" done Thursday 21st Apr was home Yesterday lunch Friday 22nd - No pain whatsover had my Lunch My Tea and an early night seeing I didnt sleep Thursday in Hospital because of the strange environment  (No pain but a lot of gassy mess in the hospital - No pain at all after midnight after just paracetomol and ibroprofen- NONE!) l I'm writing this now sat on the couch with no pain whatsover - I just had my first "Loo Visit" about an hour ago and was not even unpleasant - I dont even need the Codeine just had that once Thursday night (That causes constipation) I am just taking Paracetomol and Ibroprofen just as a bonus really I actually feel like i CAN RIDE MY BIKE!smile Im going for a wqalk round the park shortly to see what happens lol

So try not to worry - I will start a thread shortly bout my 45 yr battle with these things and hopefully also help a lot of people on the way as to how to manage these things (I had 20 years of Hell - The last 25 without a problem when I discovered what to actually do with them with no help from useless GPs and then I just needed sorting for the first time about 6 weeks ago) I was not in any great pain but I am a cyclist(Up to 300 miles a week!) but stopped me riding my bike and even walking was a pain again and did not want them things causing me any problem in the future - Correct Diet and Excercise is essential part of this - and knowledge about what all the useless GP's seem to be ignorent about - Its such a nice Morning at the mo so I am having a brew and then taking that walk - I'm actually worried that something is going to happen later in a Day or so as this is a doddle so far

Well Ive just had a walk round my local park a little later than expected due to visitors - No problems at all during and after

May I just add a thing about recovery from an op - I have only ever had one before this - a hernia 2014 and tried to get some sense about what is recovery time and what is meant by activity and excercise bla bla - How long - How much to do etc

Got loads of not sure responses until one nurse gave the correct answer - Your body will tell you what to do! Brilliant explanation because it is just that - Take my walk in the park just now - Nice and easy stroll and les than half a mile - I am a fit cyclist yet just like the first surgery - That felt like a 100 mile hike - I had no energy to give and my body told me thats enough for Today old Man now go home lol - Just relaxing with a cuppa at the mo on my new pain free bum - I have even checked for any leaks and there are none - I am actually wearing pampers as some vile smelling stuff keeps creeping out of there

I will be starting a new discussion(need more than one) on my op and its progress shortly and all the pre op stuff  I have endured and how to overcome the actual misery of piles seeing I have a few weeks to kill but in meantime anybody can mail me

I will be only too happy to help if I can or just listen and will reply to all

See you soon and hope my recovery continues because this seems far too good to be true guys!

      Hi Davecon

Reading your response makes me feel hopeful knowing that there is a possibility that the pain may not be as unbearable as I am thinking. I've suffered with them for 22 years and just when I think I've got them under control I get a flare up (usually it's due to spicy foods which I just love). My surgeon describes the pain im going to experience as "uncomfortable" so I truly hope it's not bad. I decided to go through with the surgery because I can't imagine getting up in age and having to deal with a flare up. I'm 45 now and I guess now is the time. I'm glad things are going well for you and I hope you do start that thread bc there are plenty of folks who suffer from them. Keep me posted on your recovery but by the sound of it I think you'll be just fine.

      Hi Sha

I had my first full Day Yesterday on my normal boring but very healthy diet diet and I was following instructions and had 2 lots of laxative

No problem but I needed to go about 5 mins after getting up so I will cut that down to jsut one at night I prefer breakfast first!

It was actually very pleasant but did leave me with a little "Ring of Fire" but that was soon relieved with a warm sitz bath with radox muscle bath (Great for piles as well in the bath) and am now totally pain and any discomfort free again after my breakfast and couple of Paracetomol and Ibruprofen - I am over the moon so far I hope this continues

Regarding your own situation I fear it may not be so rosy with your love of nice food - But I am not going to start giving out dietry advice lol

What I would like you to do however is to read the thread I just started 45 yrs of bla bla -You sound like you are experiencing the same sort of hell as I was myself for 20 yrs and it may (Probably is) Unneccessary

Are your piles now under control again so to speak? I have sent you a PM for modesty reasons as I am quite to the point and appreciate others may not be - So hope to hear from you as I would be only too happy to help

      Dave
