Hemorrhoid surgery recovery tips

Hemorrhoidectomy recovery
I had a hemorrhoidectomy two weeks ago. The doctor warned me that recovery process would be painful. But I didn't think it would be this intense. Here are a few tips to ease the pain. It made a world of difference in pain management for me:
1) ice packs-- most ice packs are not shaped for your butt and the flat ones only numb the butt cheeks, not the surgical site where you need relief. So make your own! Buy diapers (any size 3-6) and fill it with 3-4 cups of water and put it in a ziplock bag (for hygienic storage) and in the freezer. Once frozen, the diapers are curved perfectly to your anus area and won't drip as it melts either because the gel is designed to hold in liquid. I use one diaper several times before tossing. Just put it in a ziplock bag and refreeze.
2) squirt bottles--clean yourself with squirt bottles, not even wet toilet paper or baby wipes were gentle enough post surgery when the area is extremely raw. I bought two big squirt bottles at the drug store and fill them up before any bowel movements.
3) Boneal-- after cleaning the anus with the squirt bottles, I apply boneal (otc lotion for anal cleaning) lotion on toilet paper and dab it on my anus. It relieves the pain and itching that come later in the healing process.
4) sitz bath-- Do this 2-3 times a day and definitely after a bowel movement. Sometimes, I have my bowel movements in the sitz bath to ease the pain. Just remember to rinse it with soap and hot water right away if you have a bowel movement in there so you don't sit in fecal water and develop a uti on top of everything else.
5) if possible, stick to lots of veggies and soups for the first two weeks to allow the wound to heal. No starchy foods and anything binding!!!
These tips were given to me by the maternity nurses after I had a baby, but they are completely relevant here and I am especially grateful for the ice pack diaper trick! It was the ONLY way an ice pack can be applied to that anus area and not to my butt cheeks. Good luck and speedy recovery. BTW-- get all this ready, especially the diaper ice packs before surgery so you will have it immediately after you come home from surgery. You'll be in so much pain and not very mobile, so have all the relief remedies prepared ahead of time!

I thought I would would put my recovery advice in as this forum has helped me, maybe it will help someone else. At the end I’ll just list everything without the story.
I had my surgery about 5 days ago and while I am in discomfort, there have been many days in the last 7-10 years that I’ve had worse pain with the hemorrhoids in general (I’m only in my early 30’s). From what I understand I had three cuts all internal.
Before the surgery start increasing water intake dramatically. Get powdered fiber and mirilax and start taking it twice a day, you can mix them together. Take it every day twice a day.
I’ve found that when I’m in the most pain it’s because I need to have a BM and the best way to cope with that is having it as soft as possible. I drink mainly water right now and decaf iced tea when I need a change.
My girlfriend is a sweetheart and her and my mother have kept the pudding, jello, and soup stocked for when I need something to eat with medication. I only eat solid foods if I’m feeling nauseous.
The doctor prescribed norco and I have a muscle relaxer which I was taking maximum dosage of the first couple days, but now I’ve started to cut back on because the withdrawals are worse than the pain in my opinion. It is smart to rotate ibuprofen and aspirin if you need it. The prescription stuff will only make you constipated so it’s smart to get off them ASAP.
If I have pain and don’t BM shortly after getting to the bathroom I go straight for a sitz bath. In my case I use Dr. Teals and just soak in the tub. I was so comfortable the other night I fell asleep, so make sure you set an alarm and don’t drown yourself. After the bath or BMs I generally use a topical with lidocaine on the outside. Make sure and this is imperative, you need to have wet wipes for cleaning up. Don’t skimp on that.
Lastly I’ve really only found sleeping on my back as comfortable with feet propped up a little.
Recap
1. Start drinking water all day. Mix fiber and miralax in it twice a day to soften stool. Stay away from sugar, dairy, caffeine.
2. Only eat solid food if your nauseous at first, be healthy but keeping stool soft is priority number one.
3. If you’re in pain or discomfort you may need to make a BM.
4. If you can’t go right away, soak in tub and relax. Straining probably got you into this mess and will only hurt. Sitz bath is a plus, warm water is adequate.
5. If you get prescribed pain killers, don’t use them as a crutch. Focus on aspirin and ibuprofen. Narcotics will make it worse and possibly cause withdrawals later.
6. Not mentioned above, get up and move around occasionally. You may sleep a lot, but being active will improve recovery time. Just don’t do anything strenuous with bending and lifting.
7. Remind yourself that the odds are in your favor to not have to deal with the pain and blood in your future.
8. Optional. Binge Netflix.

Hi everyone. I'm going to share my experience and hope someone learns from it.
I had my surgery on Apr 19th. I had put myself on a liquid diet that Monday. So the surgery part was a blur and I was home before I knew it. My first BM was on Saturday and it was a strain and so little. So went out and got psyllium husk, rasberries oranges, more wipes and gauges. I indulge on these for two days straight. I stop taking the oxy on Monday afternoon because I still didn't have another BM yet.
Tuesday morning I have two BMs. First one I straight but decided to push it out. There was plenty of blood. About 15 minutes later, I have my second one. This one was brutal. All the fiber I was eating and everything I did eat decided to come out with blood. I was on the toilet for at least 2hrs bleeding like there was no tomorrow. Then when I thought I was done, I tried to wipe and I was dizzy and disorientated. I was scared and didn't know what was happening. Told my girl she might have to call 911. I thought it was from stopping the oxy so I tried calming down to get my thoughts together. I was sweating, getting cold then hot. Finally wiped myself and made it in the tub. I had the water on cold because I was sweating. Then crawled to bed but still dizzy and couldn't think. Decided to call the hospital that did my surgery but they acted like it was no big deal. They eventually told me to come by if I wanted to. I called another hospital closer to me and told them I was coming.
Skipping the wait and onto now... I had been admitted for 2 days so far. They checked my blood (hemo) and it was at 10. They checked this morning and it was at 8. something. I got checked by their surgeon and it was an experience I wouldn't wish on an enemy. I am prep for a transfusion if my blood goes down to 6-7 and doesn't go up by morning. I have tried to use the bathroom but no luck. I am not bleeding except for the expected. So hope everything goes well in the morning.
I lost blood because I was straining too much for that second BM but kept going. Imagine turning a faucet on about low to medium. Then try stopping it with just your fingers. It was like that for a good hour. But I kept pushing thinking I still had poop.
For anyone that is straining... don't push it. Let your body and the food do it for you. Eat fiber and foods that will help you stool because it will be less painful. My BM wasn't hard and it would had eventually came out but I was careless.
Good luck y'all. I'll update when I'm out.

Hi Mum,
I had my Hemrrhoidectomy around end of January 2018. It was very painful, slow to recover and the fear of passing stool was the worst! But, gratefully I'm healed now. But recently my Roids came back because either I have diarrhea or constipation. The two lumps decided to come back and take revenge on me. Now I'm back where I started. I really don't think I'll have surgery again this time around. I guess I'm pop out of luck! Good luck to all that these Roids don't comeback!

Hi Joyce,
I haven't told my doctor yet.....but I plan to send him an email about it soon. They're actually getting bigger and l might just keep them and give them a name. Lol! Not comfortable for sure and I want to know why they came back? I'll post an update once I speak to my doctor. Anybody have a suggestion on what to name them? Lol! What else can I do?

Hi Suzanne
Have you given them a name yet?
I had my op in Feb to remove two of the fellas and after a check-up at the end of April, I was told that they found another 'roid' and could not remove it at that time (due to no having enough skin for the stitches). So back under the knife in July I go. Oh the joys on knowing the pain and discomfort....and daytime TV
.
Fingers crossed that this 'op' will be the last haha

Hi Markyap73,
I think for now I'm naming them King Kong and Godzilla! So sorry you're going under again in July. As long as it wasn't to tough the first time. For me I really don't want to repeat it again because it was pretty painful to me. Let us all know how it turns out the second time.

Hi Suzanne7
I am recovering from a hemorrhoid surgery called THD and am on here reading these posts for reassurance every night that things will get better eventually. I saw that your hems are back and were not excited about a 2nd hemorrhoidectomy-I do not blame you! My fear was so big of the hemorrhoidectomy that i researched until I found the THD. I had to drive a couple hours to another state to have it done since no Dr near me does it, here they all immediately resort to the hemorrhoidectomy. My hems are mostly external so i wasnt wanting to jump the big guns for the hemorrhoidectomy. Anyways, I'm 5 days post op. I do not think this surgery is that painful at all. My pain was never over a 6/10 and i never took anything besides 600mg ibuprofen every 5 hours for the first 4 days. Bad news was I got both Strep AND Influenza A on my 2nd day post op and was in HELL. truly. But if not for that, this would not be so bad. So if you're ever desperate to try something again, look into THD. its a surgery where they use sutures to cut off circulation to the hemorrhoid and pull tissue back up. Before and after photos are amazing. NO cutting!!! I did have my external large skin tag cut off and unfortunately after straining in my first BM, it is swollen again. I'm very disappointed, but hoping it will shrink after I'm healed and passing stool normally. If not then i too will name my stubborn hemorrhoid and keep it. But i would do this surgery again. I hope that helps? Ask me any questions!!! Thankyou guys for posting so much honest helpful advice, it has helped immensely as i can only hope for days where my hemi problems will lessen or go away.

I seem to definitely be the exception, here! Thus far, anyway. I'm four days into recovery and my hemorrhoid removal surgery has hurt less than having the hemorrhoid did! The only unfortunate thing is that it all took place very quickly, so I had no prep time--which is ideal to do, in order to take a few days to clean your system out (so that it doesn't hurt to "go" later), to get some shopping and laundry and other general tasks done (so you're not having to do them in pain after surgery), and to have items on standby in case you need them (such as ice packs, clean gauze, and maybe some magnesium citrate for constipation if you need it).
I went in for a doctor's appointment on Wednesday and was scheduled for surgery the next morning, on Thursday (someone cancelled--pure luck, not an emergency). It went well; truth be told, I had more issues with the anesthesia in terms of nausea and low blood pressure than with the incision and any pain issues. After the initial pain, relieved by the Toradol shot when I woke up from surgery, I've only had what ranges between moderate discomfort to mild pain... but I've also avoided sitting, and I'm sure that standing and lying down most of the time has helped tremendously. (Even using a "doughnut" pillow doesn't erase the fact that gravity is taking place when you sit, thus putting more pressure on that region.) Having my trusty Yunga Tart toilet seat sitz bath handy is also quite helpful, of course.
My only concern is that I haven't "gone" yet... but my bowels aren't indicating that they're under any pressure and demanding that I do it, either--and straining is a definite no-no at this stage, that's for sure. I keep eating roughage (bananas, apples, lettuce), taking fiber supplements, and pressing my stomach to see how everything's going in there, but I don't feel any tightness, discomfort, etc., and gas is moving through just fine. So even though I'm "supposed to" be going, I'm actually kind of grateful that I'm healing up a bit before that particular need comes about.

Update... I finally went, and surprisingly no pain; it wasn't even impacted in the least, so I guess that I just have a slow system. However, after going that little bit, I was left with the feeling that I had to go again, only the "DON'T STRAIN" rule kept me from trying. So now it's about being caught in the uncomfortable "gotta go, can't go" / fear of pain limbo.

Yes that is where I am up to at the moment - feel like I want to go - get there - don't want to strain - get panicked - then much pain if I do go, relief after, and then wait for the next time!
Am still taking stool softeners at the moment.

My biggest setback so far is that I was recovering so well, I decided to do more (long story short, I've got an elderly mother with mobility issues) and instead ended up with a serious swelling issue after one day of extended driving/walking and the next day of helping out around the house. SERIOUS pain as a result, which took two Norco pills and about five hours to pass.
Advice-wise so far, I'd say: don't sit if you can lie down, use sitz baths, use pills and creams as you need them (rather than want them--given that ibuprofin and opioids can increase constipation), and take it easy for at least a full week.

Another update: it really is the swelling that is my main pain issue. The stitches and the BM aren't painful; it's the process of fighting the BM past the swelling that is. I've had to resort to taking a Toradol pill (leftovers, lying around) for pain on two occasions. It has been ten days after surgery. I'm now wondering if the pain will dissipate from here on out or if I should ask for some back-up pain pills. All in all, though... still rather be going through some temporary discomfort than decades more of that hemorrhoid!
