Hemorrhoid THD/ Hal-Rar/ Halo procedure question

I just had this procedure done 12 days ago and was looking to find someone who has had this same surgery. Its referred to by multiple names hence the long title of the thread, but i'm still having the urgency to have bowel movements quite often. Has anyone else had a similar experience and if so, how long did it last. Thanks in advance for any helpful comments!

I was having 3-4 bowel movements per day for the first 10 days or so. I was also taking 1 stool softener per day. Originally I was on 2 stool softeners but I took it down to 1 stool softener per day in the hopes that I would have less bowel movements because I wasn't eating a lot and normally I only have 1 bowel movement a day. A few days after I got off of the stool softener and switched to Metamucil fiber, I was back to my normal 1 a day bowel movement.

thanks for sharing. was the urgency to have a BM still there, even after it returned to what your normal BM schedule was prior to the procedure. and if so, how long did it take for that to go away as well.

Not sure I'm understanding your question. At 10 days the urge to have a BM was there way more than it normally is. I stopped the 1 stool softener per day at around the 10th day and went back to my normal Metamucil fiber supplement. By the 14th day I was having my regular 1 BM per day and the urge to go all the time was no longer there. So everything was normal at the 14 day mark.

I think the urge to always have a BM was 2 things.

First was the stool softeners, they just made me have more BM's than what I normally have (I was having 3-4 BM per day on the stool softeners).

But second, I never realized this before surgery but you have to relax your backside (the anal area) to go pee. So because I was still in some pain the first week - week and a half after surgery, every time I had to go pee it also felt like I needed to have a BM too. For a while it just felt like I couldn't go pee without feeling like I needed to have a BM as well. Again this was because I think the area is so sensitive and I was still in a bit of pain.

But again by the 14th day everything was normal no more feelings of urgency with the BM's and no more having to have a lot of BM's per day.

THAT SAID, it's been 3 weeks since my surgery now and there's been a few times this past week where I had to basically run to the toilet because the urge to have a BM was so strong that I didn't feel that I could hold it in. So I suspect things are not 100% back to normal, although I'm feeling very good.

      I hope that helps.

Thanks so much for sharing and sorry for not being clear with my question. Your answer was exactly what I was hoping to hear. If I may ask one more question, how often did you pass blood in your stool post op? For me, it was so little to none the first ten days or so, but now its become a little more frequent. I know its part of the healing process, just trying to understand what to expect going forward. Your replies have been great and it help greatly to hear from someone else who has had this procedure and is ahead of me in the recovery process!

Sorry for my late reply. So the day after my surgery I "pooped" liquid blood farts about 8 times during the morning. Gross, I know.

The whole time that I was on the stool softeners I usually had a little bit of blood, but not always. On around day 10 I had a good amount of blood come out in one of my bowel movements. On around day 12 I had a scary amount of blood come out during two bowel movements that were within 15 minutes of each other. So it was a bowel movement with lots of blood coming out and then another bowel movement 15 minutes later with just as much blood coming out.

Luckily I was alright and didn't feel too dizzy but I was certainly very freaked out. It was late at night (early AM hours actually) so I went to bed after I cleaned up, which was good because I was scared to death of bleeding out even more if I kept on having bloody bowel movements.

By the two week mark I didn't have any blood in my BM's. I don't know if it was a coincidence or not but when I got off the stool softeners a few days later the blood stopped. But then again a few days after I got off the stool softeners I was around the 2 week mark, which is a long time post op. So who knows how much role the stool softeners did or did not play the amount of blood that I lost.

I have read that it's somewhat normal for the THD procedure for people to lose a LOT of blood (like I did, as mentioned) around the 9 - 12 day post op mark. I asked my surgeon's office and they told me I only needed to seek help if I felt dizzy or felt like passing out, or felt like vomiting, or anything like that. So, I would just use your own personal judgement but certainly keep an eye on it and ask your surgeon's office when you should be worried about it, if you are losing a lot of blood.

As of now I'm 3.5 weeks post op and no blood anymore, at all. Not even a little. I had a stomach ache with diarrheas (unfortunately) at around the 3 week mark and no blood was in my stools.

Thanks so much for this insight, as it seems I may be having a similar experience as you have had. I hope your full recovery comes soon as I do for myself and a better quality of life awaits!

I just had the same procedure and i appreciate this thread.i am 5 days post-op and having the exact same symptoms. i hope you both are still following this thread.Per surgeon's instructions, i have been taking two stool softners per day along with Miralax once a day while eating a high fiber diet.I am curious if you stopped the stool softners like Kyle and had similar results? I have urgency to defecate several times a day and like Kyle difficulty urinating until i have the bowel movement. My normal prior to surgery was once a day in the am.i am off all pain meds for three days. Your response is greatly appreciated
