Hemorrhoidectomy in 13 days any positive stories

hi,
I've been struggling with hemorrhoids for the past 15 years. After the birth of my second child things really got bad. The hemorrhoids have really destroyed my quality of life over the past two years and after two bandings I have a hemorrhoidectomy scheduled in about 13 days. I have literally tried every over-the-counter, prescription and folklore remedy for hemorrhoids, squatting, ice, epsom salt baths, icing, garlic and nothing has worked. Yes, some things have temporarilyrelieved some symptoms but nothing has been curative. The bandings took care of a couple of internal hemorrhoids, but I am now left with one hemorrhoid that is a combination mixed internal / external. The internal part of this hemorrhoid prolapses with any sort of activity. Even just standing at the sink doing dishes for several minutes will cause it to protrude.
I've been reading many of the posts on this site over the past few weeks. I have taken a lot of the tips to heart and have stocked up on needed supplies. I'm just wondering if someone can speak to the level of pain I could possibly experience?
My first labor was 2 days long and not medicated. The pain I experienced with that was on an animal/ primal level. I say this as I was completely disconnected from reality the pain was so intense and the sounds that came out of me where animal-like in nature. The pain was so intense that for two days I could barely converse, didn't eat, had only a few sips of water given to me by the nurse. My entire focus was inward and just trying to make it through the intensity of the pain. I've never in my life experienced this level of pain I would put it in an otherworldly category. When I imagine the worst pain, excruciating pain, that is my reference point. Is this what I should be expecting post hemorrhoidectomy? Many posters have indicated that the pain was as bad/worse than childbirth. Is this the type of pain people are referring to?
Any positive stories would also be much appreciated especially from anyone with removal of a single mixed hemorrhoid.
thanks!!

Don't worry, your BM's will come. I ended up taking Miralax on post op day 4 to get things going and it wasn't much. I would say flat is normal. I'm sure its from the swelling and tightness of the anus.
Every day things will get a little better. I'll be 6 weeks post op tomorrow and feel great! You will be the same and it will be all worth it. Keep us updated 😃

I'm glad you made it successfully through the surgery, cat! I contemplated surgery for a long time, but along with mixed hems Grades 3 and 4, I also have a painful, recurring pelvic nerve condition. My pelvic floor PT doesn't recommend surgery as it would tighten and aggravate the pelvic nerve even more. I'm really in a bind as to what to do, considering I'm age seventy now and have a history of incontinence with my first 2 child births. Mostly, I use palliative methods to care for the hems (no bleeding or oozing), and try to get by. How I wish I could lose them without the surgery! Continued healing to you, may all be well!

Hi Sus,
Thank you for your message and well wishes. I'm sorry to hear of your current plight.
I'm just wondering if you have discussed and are eligible for rubber band ligation instead of the full hemorrhoidectomy surgery? I have had 2 rounds of banding that significantly improved my situation before having the full surgery. Have you discussed the surgery and your nerve pain with your doctor or surgeon in addition to your pelvic physio? Perhaps they might offer an alternative that might be less of a risk to the nerves in that area or maybe provide some greater insight into what the risk would be for further aggravation of that nerve. In regards to the incontinence, though I'm not an expert, I believe the risk is fairly low and as you have already had issues with this, the surgeon might be extra conservative.
Wish I could offer you more helpful advice. Sounds like you're living with a lot. If you haven't already been referred, I think you should insist on seeing a specialist. You shouldn't have to live this way.
Take care

Hello, Cat,
Thank you for your thoughtful reply. I hope you're doing much better now, and all healing goes well for you.
My pelvic physio is supportive of whatever I decide to do and will work with me as long as I need her, but she is confident that the hems aren't contributing to the nerve pain. The hems are very annoying to me, as they protrude and feel so very weird. Cleaning up after a BM is so messy, but I am fastidious and have come to accept that's just what I have to do to take care of myself. Drinking plenty of water, eating lots of fiber, too. I have had about two 2-month breaks from the pelvic pain through internal pelvic PT, needling, and pelvic floor exercises, but now again it's back. It's been a part of my life now for over 3 years. Nothing so far has been curative to the pelvic pain, just palliative, and I've chosen not to take drugs (makes me sleepy, and foggy), or pelvic nerve injections (scares me, no one knows if they will help or just aggravate the nerve).
In all, I've seen 3 surgeons about the hems. One of them (female) who's very well-respected by her peers examined me twice (at my request), and she said outright that she would not do the surgery. She believes hems are not the cause of my pelvic pain, and the surgery pain, slow healing, and its side-effects will make matters worse. Two (male) surgeons were just fine with proceeding with surgery, and in fact I was scheduled, and then chickened out. One of these surgeons suggested banding, but it's my understanding that the surgery is the only cure, and has very good results under the hands of a good surgeon. Such a hard decision to make...I don't think I could do it on the day of, I'm too scared!
You are correct in your word "plight," and I thank you for understanding and writing to me. I wish you all the best!

Hi all,
Many thanks for sharing your experience and tips... it has been invaluable. I am scheduled to have the hemorrhoidectomy done in 8 weeks. My surgeon also suggested to get bilateral pudendal nerve injection to provide somewhat extended pain relief post op. Has anyone had the same? How many hours post op did it last? I would greatly appreciate any feedback. Thanks again!
