Hemorrhoidectomy Recovery

Currently recovering from a hemmorhoidectomy which I had on Mon 28th Mar. I've never experienced pain like this before!! In the past I had 2 banding ops which were not successful however I healed from these relatively quick and was better in a few days.

With this surgery however I cannot handle the pain. Had my first bowel movement 2 days after the surgery on Weds, another yesterday, and 3 today alone! I been using lactulose and a powder medicine I was given however think I may of over done it. been eating only soups and toast, then combined with the laxatives have ended up giving myself diarrhea!!

Pain seems to last about 4/6hr after a bm and then ease off a bit but today I've not had a break. Painkiller wise I am on codeine (2 x 30mg), ibuprofen (2 x 200mg) and paracetamol (2 x 500mg) - I was told to take this every 4 hour however I have been taking it every 3 hours to prevent the pain from setting in again, keeping myself topped up. When taken near a bm, they don't help at all for the pain it feels, however can help slightly in the evenings. Aside from what I been prescribed, I also been smoking quite a bit of weed, not sure if this is helping but it distracts me a bit at least!

I'll update on the thread as I go through the recovery. I read some real horror stories of this lasting weeks and weeks, I really pray this is not the case!

how did you realise that the banding did not work?

how many did you have banded and what grade were they?

i had 3 banded 8 weeks ago which were grade 3 but i still have some bleeding with bm so i dont think it has worked.

    hope you feel better soon.

      Hey Faye

I realised as I could still feel them there - they were quite large (size of grapes I'd say), the first banding appeared to make them shrink a bit in size, however the second banding I felt made them worse.

I'd always be in pain after a bm with heavy bleeding. The hemmorhoids were grade 3 I was told and I also had 3 of them along with a bit of a prolapse.

If you are still bleeding but unable to feel any hemmorhoids, potentially you could have a fissure? definitely worth having your GP have another check over them. Hopefully you can resolve without having to have a hemmorhoidectomy

yes i can still feel them there with bm.

hoping the banding may of helped a bit.

really dont want to have further treatment.

thanks for your reply and i hope you feel better today.

hopefully you won't need any further treatment!

Today still feeling the same unfortunately, managed to get to sleep around 4am last night only to wake up at 6.30 needing to go toilet so in bad pain again 😦

Can't wait to recover, my mother had the same operation and said after all the pain, it was the best thing she done in her life so that thought is what keeps me going.

May need to move my TV to the bathroom though haha I basically live on my sitz bath atm 🤣

to be fair ive only heard the recovery is painful but worth it so fingers crossed it will all be ok..

i thought the banding was a killer for 48 hours after...hadnt quite expected that much pain so i can only imagine how you must feel..

      best of luck x

Something I'd like to add for anyone going through this, to help with easing the pain there are three things I have been doing:

    • hot shower, spraying water under my belly and above my genital, for some reason it feels like it relaxes the muscles and takes pain slightly away
    • sitz bath with hot water, this soothes the anal pain and I've basically been living on this for the last week
    • a new one i discovered today which really really helps is warming up a cup of rice in the microwave for around 1-2min, put the warm rice into a sock, and then when resting place this on ur ass, so far feels like it is really soothing the pain, also the warm rice has a nice smell of popcorn 🍿 🤣🤣

Quick update for those who may read thread at a later date, on day 10 at the moment and feel 1000x better.

The pain started to get better on day 7/8. When I did not have a bm, I felt like I was able to walk short distances and be able to relax ar home relatively pain free. Following a bm, during it the pain is bad and I was in quite intense pain for 3/4hr afterwards however it would then ease off and I felt like I can chill again.

Today I've had my first bm where the pain of going was not that bad, maybe a 3 to 4 / 10, and so far the pain afterwards is quite mild. I am lay on my side and its more of a discomforting pain now around 2/10. I've only been using 1 dose of painkillers each day following a bm, however today will be first day I will go without and just see it through naturally.

For any1 going through this recovery, I cannot stress enough how much I recommend sitz baths or if u have an actual bath use that however it is your best friend when sore!! that and the warm rice in a sock I mentioned above saved me!

I'll update the thread as I notice more changes and I hope this information shared will be useful to someone in the future going through the same.

If you have any specific questions feel free to ask and ill answer to best of my ability.
