Hemorrhoidectomy. Sharing experience to help!.

So today is 3 weeks one day after my closed hemorrhoidectomy. I had 3 internal and I guess a couple external ones that were always visible. I have been suffering with this for about 17 years and would not have done this procedure at all if it didn't become an emergency. Last year around June (2018), I started bleeding whenever I had a BM. Sometimes a great deal of bright red blood, sometimes a little and sometimes not at all. I tried to adjust diet, water intake, added fiber (benefibre) and a number of other "at home fixes," but nothing seemed to work. By October I was a bleeding quite heavily and finally decided to go to the hospital because of light headedness. I was advised to do scerlotherapy which are injections into the actual hemorrhoid that slowly kill blood vessels. I was happy and though it did hurt quite a bit, I was back to work in 2 weeks and bleeding subsided over time. A few months later... the nightmare bleeds restarted and by mid 2019 I was bleeding regularly and heavily yet again. I visited a other doctor who immediately recommended surgery. I scheduled for october 23rd 2019 and went in with a very positive attitude. ONE PAIN and it'll be over! Boy was I wrong. Everyone's experience is different but I have been finding some similarities on this site that have really helped me. The actuam surgery went well and I was given pain killers shortly after I woke up which really helped into the night and next day. I was given paraffin oil to drink to keep stools soft. Day 3 is the first time I had to use the bathroom. The oil worked but the pain was incredible. After that experience, by own body refused to relax for any further movements and I became constipated. The next time I had a bm was 10 days post op! By then I was in so much discomfort, extreme pain and could not function properly. I was on a diet of mostly jell-o, occasional white bread and very light watery food since my surgeon suggested this soft diet for 10 days to keep things soft. I think this contributed to constipation and made things more difficult. The bm on the 10th day was painful and can be described as passing broken bottles and it hurt for hours after. Next bm was day 14 after a self administered enema. Saline was the wrong decision in retrospect as the salt burnt quite a bit. It is now day day 22 and though I am a little more regular, every bm hurts and hurts for hours after.
A few things u want to mention:
-I did use seits baths and though they helped I found icing to be more helpful...
-the swollen skin tags that remain are ridiculously sensitive and painful. praying those deflate and ease soon
- there was and still is discharge daily. sometimes there will be faeces in them especially if u are constipated. it became more of a mucus eventually though I am u sure if that is from inside or the tags.
please comment and share your experiences so someone might find comfort or hope. looking forward to finishing healing and being done with this ordeal.

Story sounds very similar to my experience, I should have had the surgery 20 years ago, it deffinitley was a rough road to recovery, but suffering from fissures along with the hems allready have had experienced extreme pain from that area..I had to have Hemmerectomy, fissurerectomy and spyncterectomy all at the same time, best thing I ever did...It was an emotional and physical rollercoaster.. but you will get through it. The doctors underestimate the healing time and pain level, because if they told ya, you probably would not have the procedure done.. Good luck to all!!!!

thank you! sounds like you're all healed. was it swollen outside? Did that subside? Today has been another rough day. Can't wait to be all healed. Hope you're all better and never have to face this again!

I am 8 weeks post op and would definitely suggest that diet and regular BMs make a big difference in the recovery. I am quite surprised a doc would recommend a diet of jello and white bread. In my experience a good balance of fibre (soluble and insoluble) and healthy fats was what kept things moving. I ate (and still do) lots of porridge, cooked veggies, soups. Stay away from nuts and anything with seeds or pits as these will pass through and while they might be tiny they can still scratch the delicate healing wound. You have the toughest days behind you and it will get better. Best of luck with your recovery.

Thank you. I think I rushed back into a "regular" diet too quickly. added softeners and will definitely bulk up in veg and water. just wish the pain would end with the bm. counting each day and happy to know there are people that can relate. hope ur recovery is going well and thanks again for your comment.

if you dont want the pain when having bowel movement, fill sidz with very warm water and poop in that, clean yourself with shower wand with very warm water, that worked for me..

i had the dull ache after BMs well into my week 5. . it was mostly tolerable without any pain relief but lasted a couple of hours. i soaked in hot tub and then put ice on. when i had to sit and work i often sat on hot water bottle. while i could resume most of everyday activities, the full recovery process is definitely as slow as most people describe here.

Hi there!
Congrats you took that bold step and can assure you things are going to get better by the day .
January 10th will be 1 year post hemorriodectomy for me and the skin tag have shrank significantly but tends to get bigger after a bowel movement hence causes discomfort .
Now if i lay and now not stress it ,it shrinks back to its normal size which always happen when i pass gas .
Is this the same for others in same anniversary date as me or i should be worried?

Looking forward to that one year mark. I have done a lot of reading and I'm not sure if that tags ate supposed to be that tender or swelling after so long. Consult with your doctor to be safe. Thank you for sharing. my tags are decreasing in size but it's still int week four so hoping there is still better to come.

I had the haemroidoctomy done on 27th September, over 8 weeks and I'm not back to work. I think the wound has teared open again. The horrific pain is back and I'm bleeding when I haven't done in weeks.
