Hemorrhoids surgery, recovery time and the truth

I had the surgery 4 months ago. Before the operation my surgeon stated that the recovery time will be one to two weeks and I believed it! When two weeks passed and I was still in extreme pain and still running between bed and bathroom, he said the " complete" recovery will take 1 month and what he said about 2 weeks meant the recovery from the "clinical" aspects! One months passed, still pain and discomfort... This time our great lair who seems to be trained to create medical lies said: Oh! Everybody heals differently, for some people a "complete" recovery time can be three months! three months passed and now I'm 4 months and a week PO, cant sit easily, can't stand more than 30 minutes (due to feeling pressure in rectum) , cant work normally (due to weak body and lack of energy), cant eat normally, but still hearing from my butcher: Up to 6 months, in some cases 1 year!!! ... Oh dear God! how are surgeons train in medical colleges to lie with no shame! ....Dear medical butchers! We human beings who are dehumanised under your bloody knives, WE know you're lying! STOP REPEATING LIES! ...

we ordinarily people who know nothing about medicine, present our bodies to you offering money to you to listen to your lies, we know that and you know....! Stop your lies! We know you have to lie to us before a surgery: the recovery time is 1 to 2 weeks, you can resume your normal activities after two weeks.... We know if you do not lie, nobody comes to you to present money and the body and mind to be destroyed by you... ! Yes, for a few dollars, apply the knowledge you have learnt in universities, and the respect you have gained as MDs and surgeons, these titles, yes, respected butchers, abuse the pain patients suffer, to refill your pockets.

My advice to people who

I am 8 months post op, and i am here to also say yes it gets better. i had 2 grade 3 hems that i lived with for years and i am sorry i didnt do the surgery earlier. YES its brutal in the beginning and this site got me through this awful time. but i wouldnt change a thing. i remember jane 16431 would tell me that it could take a full year to be fully healed!! and thats what kept me believing that it will take time and you just have to be patient. its everything thing everyone is saying, BUT the end result, at least for me was a success! ill be honest even after even 8 months i still have days (not many) that i have itching, constipation, some bleeding, because im left with skin tag which is very common. but at least it goes away and im good to go. Everyone hang in there! listen to what helps everyone on this thread and you to will survive this!! my only regret is i didnt do it sooner!

I'm week 5 now.. Back to work, full range of activities as per usual. Still have to be careful about preventing hard stools. Hydrating well, keeping active and taking in lots of fibre is becoming a way of life. Pain isn't gone completely with BM, but is manageable. It feels "scratchy" more than painful. Burning gone. Itching madly at times.

Still bleed and drain small amounts from time to time especially with hard stools . Only wear pads for about an hour or two after a BM. I think I'll be using the spray down options after BM whenever I can, even after full healing.

I still use bactroban on the area at night when I go to bed.

This operation has knocked my confidence a little.. Not too sure why

I'm week 10 now.. BA is relatively pain free 80-90% of the time. Sometimes some minor bleeding. No more discharge/pads etc

I tried to be too active after the surgery. Developed a gluteal strain playing squash. Then later patellofemoral pain issues as a result of the subsequent gait changes. Take it slowly and be gentle with yourself.

I'm almost 100%. Still feel ambivalent about the surgery. I'd have waited if I'd have known what I know now.

Fully agree! I'm 10 months post operation, still have painful condition. I've not been able to sit during the past 10 months... lost about 20 kg weight... never had such miserable life before this horrible surgery.

NO hope to get well again...

you need to see a specialist or superspecialist.. being functionally debilitated at 10 months isn't normal. You might be developing a chronic fissure or similar. Don't give up hope, most people are eventually ok. Even if it takes a very long time

Did you have rectal swelling like a skin tag/hemmorhoid looking area after your surgery? If so, how long did it take to heal up? Mine is rather large, prevents me from sitting, not able to stand long due to pressure. I had a stapled hemmorhoidectomy in April and a lateral internal sphincteronomy in May. I am 5 weeks post op and feeling depressed my life will never be the same. The doctor keeps saying some people take longer than others to heal. I am normally pretty active but now all I do is lay in bed or soak in the tub. Please help..anyone who might have had this swollen fleshy thing...how long did it take to go away. Thanks

if you had a sphincterotomy your hemorrhoids must have been really bad. I also had a skin tag, it took about 2 weeks to heal.

Keep positive! I know it's hard.. This process is sheer hell. Most people end up very happy in the long run though. You can only tell what things will be long term after like a year.. The pain will improve long before that.

Yes it is sure hell. I wasn't mentally prepared for this I guess. My surgeon said 14 days I should be better. This is 5 weeks. Some of the pain is starting to subside but I still have pain/pressure/tenderness when standing. I can't sit as it hurts and rubs. I am sure hoping for relief soon and these large skin tags have me worried as they are not gone down. Thanks for your reply and I am trying to be positive

Thankyou I will start walking a little every day and see if that helps. Walking is still slow due to it being so tender there. It also feels like that tag rubs and hurts. I am hoping for a light at the end of the tunnel.

walking is the best. thing. it helps alot. but remember. use alot of ice down there. that is a big plus. and i did.

I'm 2 weeks and 1 day post surgery, 3 hemorrhoids removed. I've thought I'd add my experience so far to add a different perspective. I'm a 52 year old female, type 2 diabetic, otherwise healthy. I walk (not too fast, not too slow) 4-5 times a week for 40-60 minutes. That's the only exercise I get regularly. I have a desk job. My hemorrhoids were never painful and rarely bled. I chose to have the surgery because I hated how they "hung" out (grade 4) and there was the hygiene issue. I must also add that my pain tolerance is average at best.

Prior to surgery, I followed the instructions from UWHealth , except for the enemas. The surgery, under general anesthesia, took less than 15 minutes, and I was home within 5 hours. I was given 2 Tylenols pre-op, area was injected with Exparel during surgery, no other drugs given before I was discharged. My surgeon had explained the Exparel would keep the area numb up to 72 hours. I was sent home with rxs for Oxycodone and lidocaine ointment, and advised about alternating acetaminophen and ibuprofen every 3 hours for pain management and using Dulcolax to keep stools soft.

I can really say that I did not feel any pain for 2 days and did not take any pain meds then, even during bms. I still took sitz baths religiously with very hot water. Once the numbing started to wear off on day 3, bms became very painful (not really pain, more stinging burning sensation). I would immediately afterwards jump in the bathtub, spray the area with the handheld shower head then soak in a hot bath for 20 minutes. Once I was done, I used a hairdryer (set on cool) to dry the whole area. Pain the rest of the time was quite manageable, my worst day I took 8 aceta/ibu pills (in 24 hours, alternating as needed). I started also using the lidocaine ointment before bms. I went "commando" for most of the time, easy to do when you wear a nightgown. Sitting down and getting up were painful, but once down or up, everything was pretty manageable. I also started taking Miralax and stopped dulcolax. Day 5 was the toughest for me. The pain was not particularly worse, I was just mentally tired. As bms were more predictable, I started walking 40-60 minutes/day, slowly. Around day 8 post-op, I started using a squirt bottle (filled with very hot water) and baby wipes after bms in preparation for returning to work. About this time I also switched from Miralax to Metamucyl. I went back to work 11 days post op, and... I was fine! I had to go while at work several times, but the squirt bottle with the hot water and baby wipes did the job, not ideal but definitely doable. I saw my surgeon 2 days ago, and she said everything looked great, easy for her to say. The area feels quite swollen still, the area looks lumpier than pre-surgery (she says tissue will retract, although may not be perfect). I was still having 3-4 bms/day so she suggested I stop or half the Metamucyl. I was also concerned about a little yellowish discharge that started showing up and she reassured me it was the top healing layer sloughing off, and totally natural, not pus, like I feared. I've halved my dose and I don't need to go as often! Best yet, before, there was very little control when I needed to go, couldn't wait at all. Now, my bowels, at least, are starting to feel like they used to. Every day my bottom feels less tender and sore to the touch.
