HERNIA

Hi

In July i was diagnosed with a sliding hiatus hernia, severe reflux and a distended and swollen bowel.

My two main problems are:

A. I get a lot of heartburn, retching and burping and with an hour of eating feel very bloated. I also have a lot of wind and stomach cramps.

I was prescribed Omeprazole for three months but my specialist says to stop. I only have a week or so tablets left. Without it I feel dreadful.

B. Before being diagnosed I ate a high fibre diet - brown or wholemeal bread, whole grain rice etc. I was advised by the hospital to eat a low fibre diet. I have tried to incorporate both but alternate from diarrehea to severe constipation (only taking a laxative will help).

I am a vegetarian.

For example last night I had some grilled salmon and veg at 6.30 pm and some rice pudding and stewed fruit at 7.30 pm and hardly slept a wink due to retching and heartburn. Now at work today and feel a wreck.

What should I be eating? Any suggestions?

Some days I'm ravenous other days I do not feel like eating as feel constantly sick.

My specialist says he does need to see me again as it will settle down.

Hi Dee and sorry to hear your plight.

Digestive problems can be a misery. I wonder why the consultant suggested coming off omeprazole. Perhas he thought your bowel problems weren't acid related after all?

Problems regarding diet are we're all different and foods affect us differently. The best advice is for you to keep a food diary and correlate this with symptoms to find out which foods to avoid.

I, too, find high fibre foods can cause me problems though I do eat plenty of nuts (favourites are Brazils and almonds) and fruit (favourites are peaches, conference pairs, apples). But I also manage curries well (Thai, Chinese and Indian).

I think the main thing is to eat small portions ut to remember to snack more frequently.

avoid salts and fats in the diet.

try to be on simple carbs and proteins.

never eat anything before 2 hours of a large meal

try to finish your dinner before 7 P.M.

dinner shall be as light as possible.

    focus on bowel movements,

have bricks placed below your bed on head side in order not to have painful reflux in the night.

    Do walking or swimming.

    if possible Do yoga.

The food I eat does not seem to effect  me in this way. I am going to say that it sometime helps. Maybe at those times I need something in my stomach to give the acid something to eat.??????????
