Hi, In answer to your question, yes it is. In my case it was quite some time before it happened, but like you i suddenly became aware that one side of my tummy bulged out more than the other, I had eventually agreed to a colostomy some 25 years ago and apart from getting use to this I had no problems with a hernia until now. Although.friends with Crohn's or bowel problems have told me on a number of occasions that they had to have the hernia operated on and some surgical procedure using guaze to strengthen the stomach wall inserted. All of them seem extremely satisfied with the result. I think It is the nature of things, as the bowel gets such a lot of problems as we all suffer from going to the loo a lot and in most cases we lose a lot of weight, so our poor stomachs don't know whether to expand or retract. I am waiting for an appointment from my Colostomy Team to see if there is something I can use to help as opposed to opting for surgery. This may seem strange to you, but for the first time in over 20 years I have some control and I don't really want to go back to the days when I had no control at all. Good luck anyway and I am sure that you will receive messages from others who have hernias and can advise you how it affects them and what they have had done about it..
Best wishes
Sheila .

Hi Simon
Yes, as Sheila said, it is quite normal. I have a colostomy bag and I slowly developed a hernia under it which I didn't do anything about at the time and it gradually got bigger and bigger, it is now the size of a football - no exaggeration!
I see my consultant next week and I'm going to ask him if there is anything they can do about it because I'm fed up wearing maternity style tops! I have hernia belts but they can get a bit uncomfortable after a while.
Hope this helps.
