I think it might be a hiatus hernia . What are your symptoms and have you previously had surgery in that area? I'm not a doctor so that is just my opinion. I have a paraesophageal hernia

thanks for replying, No i have had no surgery there. its a frustrating thing. I have no acid reflux issues. Just a balloon type feeling where the lumps is , some digestive problems and little sharp pains elsewhere in the abdomen

Thanks for replying, good to know that hiatus hernia can be to left side near bottom of ribs,  and i can be hiatus without the presence of  heartburn or acid reflux issues?

It helps to eat little and often avoiding food that can irritate your stomach.

caffiene should be avoided and smoking only makes it worse as does bolting your food letting in too much air into your system, good luck try asking doc for proton pump inhibitor it reduces acid in the gut which really helps

Thanks for replying, I have no acid reflux problems. all the problems are low down, except headaches (which i assume are unrelated) i have a balloon like feeling where the lump is, i get a stitch quickly if i walk, i have some digestive issues and i get sharp pains elsewherein my abdomen, Is this unusual ?

Yes. I'm afraid it can cause agonising pain lower down in your tummy including constipation and diorea.

i have no end of problems with the thing and yes I suffer migraine headaches too as a result of the electro lite imbalance in the gut.

reflux doesn't always happen for most but as it progressed mine became very evident

ive spoken to hundreds of people about the op to correct but personally decided for me I wouldn't want it as I'm older and not good with anaesthesia .

that horrible feeling you decscribe in me at times transfers to my wind pipe like there is a golf ball stuck in it making swallowing difficult .

i have to say I've been assured by my doc that its nothing more than trapped air and worrying about it makes it worse.

so amply chewing every thing you eat is important as it helps food get past the hernia without trapping air in it which is were the sharp pain is coming from.

i know it's quite scary at first it feels like you have something sinister sitting there.

just feel assured there are millions upon millions of us and we all live with day to day just don't get anxious about it. I find accupuncture helps me good luck .

    Mattrossi,

it sounds to me that you might have a paraesophageal hernia . It is a type of hiatus hernia but not common at all. I don't have heartburn but have had some headaches and I don't usually have headaches. How did they discover your hernia? I live in Canada so all my medical results are available to me if I ask for them. You should ask your referring doctor what kind of hernia you have. I don't eat as much food as I used to. I do get those sharp pains in my abdomen and my doctor said when they are very sharp and feel like a heart attack that the hernia is moving . I get a ton of gas and now take medication called domperidone to help relax the muscle at the junction of the esophagus to the stomach. It is important to not be constipated so I try to eat more fruit and drink more water. I am avoiding caffeine and spicy foods. If you do have a paraesophageal hernia an operation will be strongly recommended. The stomach has pushed up beside the esophagus and can't go back down without an operation. Para means beside. My ribs get sore from the pressure of the hernia. I find it difficult to sit for very long so I walk or lie down.
