Herpes and the army

Hey all was wondering whether anyone could help me out.

I'm joining the British army I've already passed my medical and I'm due to start my basic training. However I've just recently been diagnosed with herpes.

Will this diagnosis now affect my military career?

Will the army now kick me out even though I've already passed the medical?

Any information would be really appreciated as I'm really worried!

Thank you

Just had a look on the military website and it does mention herpes genetalia but seems to be that it is only a problem if it is not responsive to treatment.

So if you can clear an outbreak with antivirals it doesn't seem to be a problem, only if it is unresponsive to treatment.

Were you diagnosed with type 1 or 2? xx

Well chances are you may never get another outbreak and if you do it most likely won't be anywhere near as bad as the first.

I was told that type 1 is the 'better' type and recurrent outbreaks were far less likely. I have type 2 and even with that my future outbreaks have been far less severe and easier to manage and carry on life as normal than the first

there is no such thing as a difference between type 1 and type 2, the number refer to location, 1 being oral 2 being genital, if you have genital herpes you have type 1. the herpes virus is the herpes virus, its the same strain throughout.

      sorry typo:

      type 1 = oral

      type 2 = genital

Not strictly true...HSV1 is the more common and does typically affect the mouth but it can be spread and cause genital outbreaks (as this lady has).

HSV2 typically affects the genitals and it is very uncommon for it to cause oral outbreaks.

So they are 2 different strains of the same virus with very minor differences such as recurrence and severity of symptoms when it is contracted genitally.

considering about 80% of the pooulation has hsv1, i dont think its a big deal. even if you do test positive, they dont know where you get outbreaks. it could be oral for all they know.
