Can herpes keep you from enlisting or joining the military?

I can't answer that for sure, but I highly doubt it, since it is so common, especially Type 1! Even Type 2 is somewhat common, and neither are included in most STD panels. In fact, routine testing (without symptoms) is stupidly not encouraged, hence why herpes is so prevalent.

Yeah that is stupid because I think that the culprit that transmitted the disease to me, doesn't know that he has it! I hope that this debilitating disease doesn't keep me from joining. If so I'm going to be very disappointed 😔

I just did a quick Google and I think genital herpes is okay, so long as it is not a frequent, physically debilitating issue and can be successfully managed with meds. Your best bet is to contact your local recruitment arm. Good luck!

thank you so much! You have been a big help. So  what mess that are out there on the market or prescription medication are helpful?  Also have you ever heard of oil of oregano? If so what's your disposition on using that as a suppression therapy?

The only recognised meds that are proven to reduce shedding, recurrences and transmission are acyclovir, valacyclovir and famciclovir. For long-term daily suppressive therapy, only the first two are recommended. Oil of oregano and other natural treatments may help some, but they do no not reduce transmission, are not scientifically proven, and would unlikely be recognised as effective treatment by the military as a result. Which HSV type do you have? If you have genital HSV-1, you are unlikely to experience many recurring issues, so don't even need meds.

Idk all I know is the virus begins with mono I didn't even look at the paper good enough because I was so distraught!

Sounds like you had better get a hold of your lab report first before assuming you have herpes! Mono is something completely different, although a part of the larger herpes virus family.

Well I don't understand why the people would tell me that it's herpes if it's not an STD. IM CONFUSED 😕

Did you know that chickenpox is also a herpes family virus? There are around eight human herpes viruses, but only two types belonging to one category are responsible for genital herpes. Ask for your results. You need to know what exactly you were diagnosed with, and if specifically HSV, which type. Since you mentioned mono, however, I doubt it was herpes, but Epstein-Barr Virus (proper name for mono).

I'm pretty sure it's herpes though because I've had outbreaks in my anus.

Hmmm, then maybe it is, but it's still important to know which HSV type you have, if you do have it. What were they saying to you when you heard them say "mono"? That is what has me confused!

That's just it they didn't tell me anything. They just handed me a sheet of paper and walked out the door. I asked the nurse that I was talking to at the time she said that the name of that particular virus confirms that I have herpes and it begins with mono.

Well, that is just plain confusing, and I'm now super curious to know what they diagnosed you with! See if you can get a copy of your lab report to avoid any misinterpretation, plus the results often contain additional useful info (e.g., what the test specifically looked for, the test type, test brand, your result or index value, etc.).
