Herpes- may 2015

I was diagnosed with genital herpes the last week of May. I was told to expect 4-8 outbreaks every year for the next 2-5 years, and then it'll slow down. It is now December and I have not had any outbreaks or issues at all. I was diagnosed in a walk in clinic and he did a visual and he says he swabbed me. But could it be wrong if I haven't had any outbreaks in 6-7 months? With all complete absolute honesty- I have not had any other outbreaks except that original issue. And everything I have read online- ( it's the internet so who's 100% it's true) this never happens. People get outbreaks pretty often especially during high stress periods. And I am frequently stressed out considering I'm a single mom, and have recently lost my job. Any thoughts? Thank you in advanced.

If you had a positive swab, it is not likely to be wrong. You should ask for a copy of your results to be sure your doc tested. The 5-6 (or whatever number!) recurrences per year is just an average, so some have more and others less. The HSV type you have also has a bearing on frequency. If Type 1, it rarely recurs. Stress is not fully proven to trigger outbreaks. Where it does, it is usually prolonged periods of high stress, not everyday stress. Hope that addresses your points!

My Dr. Said my first outbreak could be the only one I ever get, but also said I could get a couple a year. If you have been good, just roll with it! Maybe it will just go to sleep and hopefully not wake p again! Do you take the Valtrex daily for suppression?

No. I don't take anything for suppression. I was given a 10 day prescription for it on my initial outbreak, and nothing since. My issue is I am constantly paranoid and 90% of my day to day life is me being concerned about having another. I hate the paranoia.

Well, you have to let it go and don't stress about it. Trust me, I understand the concern, my ob was horrible, but if you're not talking anything for suppression and you haven't had another one, maybe your immune system has grown stronger. Be aware of symptoms, but don't over think it. I hope you can relax and that nothing else happens for you.

Do you even know which type you have? I'm guessing Type 1, but there are always exceptions, and it's important to know for sure. Anyway, as Lynn said, if you've had HSV for several months, are not on the meds, and yet you've not had a recurrence so far, then count your blessings and try to relax! Some women (usually Type 2) have over 10 recurrences a year!! Each month you pass I would count as a small victory. smile
